All the windows were down this morning

Hoping for some help here
The wife's 54 plate mk1 tdi se had all the windows fully down this morning.
I thought it maybe similar to the mk2 so thought she had just held the unlock button on the fob but after trying it the car obviously doesn't have the function where the windows work from the fob.
Can anyone help as to what may have caused this?

They will prob do it with the key in the door, mine does it with key in door but not by the fob, maybe some waters got in and sent it funny???

I tried the key in the lock and it doesn't put them down either or open the locking.
It just opens the one door and doesn't knock the alarm off.
Is this normal?

Even if you turn and hold it ?

I think the lock/unlocking is normal..... honestly can't remember - maybe it's battery related (?)


If nothing's missing and the locks aren't obviously damaged, it's probably one of those freak incidents (not very reassuring I know)

Where's the car parked overnight ? Could it have been an opportunistic thief that got disturbed ??

Sits up the driveway in a fairly quiet area. No obvious signs of tampering.

Pretty sure it's something to do with the door micro switch mate, do the interior lights still come on when you open the doors?

i would say it's the micro switch as well had it happon to me .water gets in and it short's.there was a gide to repair it some where

I checked someone's a while ago on vagcom and they said its right in the bowels of the door and is a total pita to get at

I will check it with vagcom later to see if it shows anything
All the door work the interior lamp alright though.

Did a bit of reading there with some varied results, most are saying with this fault there will be nothing logged in vag com. Some a3 owners claim its to do with batteries in the key fob (makes no sense to me), some are saying dirty or sticky window rubbers/seals (activating the finger trap function but then again it would be odd for it to be on both sides) and some are saying loose connections at the battery.

I would get it onto vag com just incase there's a fault logged somewhere that will point you in the right direction

Just checked on vagcom
Error code central locking drivers key unlock short circuit to ground
It deletes off but comes back the next time you check.
Tried lubricating the latch and inside the key lock but no good.
Dies anyone have a link for how to repair the micro switch?

I would say this is your problem as you say window don't go up & down on the key in the lock as they should,if it were dirty rubbers they would stay up in the first place,i have recently put a post on a thread with a link to how to replace the switch as i've got to replace mine & tbh not to bad a job just fiddly.

I just priced a lock at £105 and I've tried to remove the handle to gain access to spray it with electrical cleaner but when I loosen the screw to remove the outer door handle the small part is solid and doesn't move at all.

It is a mk1

You can get a new module on ebay for £48 posted,just bought 1 for mine

If it the screw that realises the door lock there is someone have same problem in thread on this page

Yeah the screw that releases the part of the handle doesn't seem to loosen anything.
