I don't see any reason at all to change the aux belt and tensioner at the same time as the cambelt.

Maybe dont necessarily have to do aux belt and tensioner as its easily done later if you cant afford to do it, but the hydro damper should be changed as standard practise imho.

With regards to this being done cheap at W. Livingston. They had a deal running a while back, it was something like 20 or 25% off parts and labour if I remember correctly. For cars of 4 years old, voucher was valid for 12 months. Cant remember the exact details but I bought my car from them and they wrote to me with this offer when the car was 4 years old.

I used my voucher and got the timing belt/ water pump done at the time. Only cost around £220 and that would have been done in 2009. :)

Thanks for that mate that would explain the price I have got on my receipt. All my services were done there on my car. I thought it might have been a discount for the owner due to being a regular customer but that definatly sheds some light on it. Mine was registered October 2005 and the work was carried out in 2009.

:coolthumb

It was a bloody good deal that's why I remember it quite clearly.

Cheers Scott for spreading light on this. I will get the hydro damper done along with another cambelt change later on in the year as I will be keeping the car and on the quest for more power so prob worth doing.

I find it strange that no garages recommend getting the damper done at the same time. If you say you want the timing belt done they say straight away we recommend you do the water pump at the same time which is fair enough. But the damper never gets mentioned....

Exactly

Spoke to David Hawthorne at Sere motors his never seen a tensioner or hydro damper fail in the 10 years his worked at Seat. Ill change it anyway later on in the year when I do the belt just to be on the safe side

I picked up my timing belt and water pump kit for £150 off dave from sere yday and im getting it fitted for £75 by johny from AI Autosports over here in N.I so only costing me £225 :)

yep and hes down the road from my work so i just pop in and collect! gonna get an armrest off him next month

Not sure, i know very little about the servicing of these cars, i think it consisted of a belt/tensioner/idle pulley/water pump? Is the hydraulic tensioner an additional part, i think this kit is usually 200+ but with the forum discount its £158, as i called in and paid cash i think he just rounded it down to 150 for me

The dampers are about £85 genuine.

Seen three cause problems, they're just an oil filled hydraulic push rod. One went weak and the timing slipped, another went weak but the belt stayed on and the last one burst resulting in major engine damage.

We always recommend that it's change but people moan at the extra cost involved.

Genuine cambelt kit includes: belt, tensioner roller, idler roller and any nuts/bolts required. The water pump is not included, same with the damper.

Gates or SKF offer the most comprehensive kit but continental make most of the OE 20vt belts.

Gates and continental are the only 2 brands I've seen on genuine belts but there may be others. INA and Littens make most of the tensioners and FAG make the rollers.
