Rubbish news day, the EGR valve broke on the car and took the turbo out with it, well not completely but it's definitely damaged it, it makes this really loud whistle when the turbos boosting ( I like the sound to be honest ) anywho pin breaks in the EGR valve, it and finished up in the turbo smashing the blades of the turbo wheel, mechanic at the turbo place asked me if I might be interested in upgrading the turbo while it's off instead of putting a standard one back on, I'm a bit dubious (paranoid) about upgrading am I going to finish up pouring money into it, one of the lads who works for him said he's upgraded his and it's not been a moment's trouble.

What do you think! Should I stick to stock turbo or upgrade and remap

It's a 2.0tdi 140ps it's about £650 with new parts labour and oil etc, +£100 if I upgrade

if it were me i'd upgrade. same clutch set up as the 170 fr if i remember correctly, so they can handle around 200bhp on the stock clutch.
So you could upgrade and remap to around there to be safe. Plus seeing as its an upgraded turbo it will in theory last longer as it's under less strain?

You'll need to get the car mapped, and depending on which upgrade (1 or 2) in hybrid's you go for you might also be looking at a clutch.

Do you have any other mods on the car?

No there's no other mods, Paul ( the mechanic ) did say if I did upgrade I would have to have it remapped otherwise the CPU would still be grafting at 140ps, he reckons by the time it's finished the engine could be knocking out around 220bhp give or take, I'm not clued up on this one little bit, is there certain specifics with remaps I.e fuel consumption over power, happy medium with improved power and better fuel consumption or just full on power, uoohhhrr the headache of it all

You don't want full power. It'll smoke like hell. Unless you get switchable maps and save the full power for the drag strip. And you'll definitely need a new clutch.

Go for a mild 200ish and 310ft/lb torque, around there.
Keep the stock gearbox parts and drive as you normally would. Just don't floor it in low gears.

With a nice hybrid turbo you'll be smoke free and enjoying a lovely power boost. And have better fuel consumption as well. Unless you boot it of course....

Ace, thanks for the advice lads (assuming your all lads) & lasses, would I benefit, from any other little bits like banging a better panel filter in instead of the stock filter, it's going to be a little while before I get it back on the road, so I could be doing little low cost bit before it gets turbo'd up and remapped

Smoke wise you wont see much difference between 200 or 220! Even at 220 it wont be as bad as suggested. ;)

So he is pointing you towards a stage 2 hybrid. Remap, full exhaust system and a clutch and away you go. MPG can still be ok if you don't drive with a heavy right foot, I just did a trip to AKS and was still seeing 46MPG.

Where in the country are you, maybe a trip with someone with a stage 2 might be worth trying to get.
