Good Morning All,

I feel a bit cheeky asking for advice on my first post but please know that I have been lurking for a while and this is a brilliant forum that has helped me decide to buy my car and now hopefully look after it!

Well I have just got back from having my bonnet liner replaced due to the common mould issue at Barlow Motors, Wolverhampton, their service was good.

I had my suspicions that the car I bought a few weeks ago had some repair work to the O/S rear door as the paint seemed slightly off compared to the drivers door and there were speckled patches, I asked Seat to look at it in case it was a paintwork issue but i does now appear to be poor repair work.

Popped into John Aldridge repair centre on the way home who quoted £380 to prep, spray and blend the rear door, driver door and the panel with the fuel cap on.

Does anyone have any opinions on this price as I have never had this type of work done before, or are there any other places local to Wolverhampton/Walsall that people would recommend.

Thanks for your time

This isn't an intentional bump! Does anyone feel i will have any recourse with the dealer i purchased the car from or is it just a case of i didn't notice it hard luck?

I only purchased the car 2 weeks ago and paid the deposit on credit card if that helps!

Thanks All

John Aldridge is brilliant mate, you could also try a place called shirades in Cannock. Where you from mate. With ref to the dealer maybe if its a Seat dealer maybe you could make a fuss if its a back street garage then I'm guessing its gonna be more of a challenge but saying that you will still have certain consumer rights.

I have been quoted £130 for just the panel with the fuel flap after some lovely person decided to take a nice gouge out of it.
That's from an independent in the North East.
Have not had it done yet as i am looking to get a spoiler fitted at the same time, but its a bit close to holidays.

Thanks for all the replys

Im from bilston marks.

It was sinclair direct based in wales, quite a large group.I dont think they do have to declare it but reading the fair trading guidelines it recommends that any damage repairs are picked up on the safety check that garages should do and the buyer informed.

'It may not always be possible to find out whether a vehicle has been the subject of accident damage if it was not recorded as an insurance claim.
However, you should take all reasonable steps to identify whether the vehicle has been accident damaged, for example by conducting a vehicle
history check or asking the seller to declare any such damage'

The chap at John Aldridge was very helpful so it may be there (hopefully with some cash from the dealer )

This is what I sent to the dealer, nothing from them yet:

Good Morning xxxxx,

Please see attached images

I recently purchased the above car from you, It has become apparent that the car has had previous accident damage to the rear off-side passenger door and wing resulting in some less than acceptable paint work being applied to the car. When viewing the car I noticed the very small speckled area to the top right and put this down to a paintwork warranty issue which i would take up with the dealer, however following visiting the dealer today and an independent car repair center they have identified and pointed out to me the distinct paintwork issues with the whole of the door, poor arch formation and on the wing.

I don't know if it was the previous owners or yourselves who had this work completed but when I asked prior to purchasing the vehicle if there was any accident damage I was told 'not to your knowledge', but even so I feel that when doing the vehicle check when it arrived with yourself or even at point of sale it should have been picked up and at least highlighted to myself.

I feel that you may say I should have noticed this prior to purchase but that would not be acceptable to me, the car was not cleaned to an excellent standard externally when i viewed it and I feel that contributes to not seeing the variation in shades on the paintwork, also the fact that I am no motor industry professional and purchased the car in good faith.

The first 2 images show the paintwork shade issues and the last 2 show the difference in the archwork.

What I would like to resolve the issue is a goodwill gesture to assist in paying for the work to be completed on the vehicle.

I had a good buying experience with yourselves and I hope this can continue after-sale.

I look forward to your response via email please

Kind Regards

I will be doing my best to get as much as i can out of them towards the costs, I'm sure they will try and wriggle though!

[These checks are generally mechanical, not cosmetic, cosmetic is usually reflected in price, whereas they can't sell a mechanically unsafe car][/red]

I feel that you may say I should have noticed this prior to purchase but that would not be acceptable to me, the car was not cleaned to an excellent standard externally when i viewed it [How long had they had it in stock? Perhaps it hadn't been prepped? Maybe they never noticed the damage either?] and I feel that contributes to not seeing the variation in shades on the paintwork, also the fact that I am no motor industry professional and purchased the car in good faith.

I read that and thought... cheeky git, he obviously noticed the "damage" when viewing, made limited efforts to check about prior damage and is now trying to get a / another "discount" off the car post sale.

I'd be interested in the following:
  • Was the car below market value to account for any cosmetic "issues"
  • Have you already haggled and received discount from list price
  • Was it an indy garage or franchise / main dealer?

I'd think you'd be lucky to get any good will.

Hi Glanza,

Thanks for your reply,

The car wasn't discounted for any cosmetic issues

I did negotiate about a 5% discount off the list price

The car was from a franchised dealers used cars division. (Sinclair Group)

To be honest the speckles in the paint was pointed out yet only briefly and put down to minor fading which maybe wrongly I didn't pursue further.

I can assure you I'm not trying my luck, if i have to pay the whole sum to get it sorted so be it, as I said it may well be my fault for not noticing, but if the dealer has any obligation or I have some rights then I'm going to use them, wouldn't anyone?

They had the car in for a couple of months and had a sale fall through on it, and you say they will have nothing recorded but shouldn't they do a pre-sale check on the vehicle which would have picked up this sort of issue, at least then I could have mulled it over

A "pre sale check" would only pick up any insurance work, if the work on your vehicle was carried out otherwise ( cash for instance) there would be no record. With the current sky high cost of insurance and equally high excesses its an option a lot are taking.

Rather than the database checks, I meant more like the '54' '110' however many point checks that are meant to be done to ensure safety before sale, thought these would also look at bodywork.

They say they do them checks but they will only make it noticeable if it favours them, I'm thinking they will just say it wasn't noticed in inspection the sly ****ers.

I think the amount you have been quoted is alright. They will do a brilliant job. You get what you pay for so yes you probably could get it cheaper but it don't mean to say there work will be any good.

Hi mate I've been told spray station in Bilston is good they are by morrisons on the industrial estate, I also went to shorades in cannock and they are decent they'll tell you there honest opinion, hope that helps
