hi guys recently been thinking about getting a towbar fitted, cant find a company that do them for the cupra?? This could be down to the fact the car has a 0KG towing weight, would pulling a small trailer with a bike on be too much strain on the clutch?? May sound like a stupid question but i cant justify buying another car just for towing and love the cupra.... Cheers

Get a bike carrier maybe, not a trailer.. Because then its not classed as a trailer as it has no wheels! So im sure this would then be ok?
I've got a tow bar on mine and us a thule 3 bike carrier and its brilliant! And I cart around heavy down-hill bikes..

you can get a towbar on. theres a cupra i see going about around here quite a bit with a tow bar and roof rack fitted.
I've got a towbar fitted to my Cupra, i was sick of putting my bike in the back of the car and didnt like the thought of a boot mounted bike rack. Its a removable towbar and i'd recommend it to anyone. As for towing, surely having a car full of people would have the same effect on the clutch as towing?
The thing is, you're not meant to be using it for towing. I'd say it's unlikely, but if plod did notice and pull you over, you could get in trouble for it due to the 0kg towing rating.
It makes no sense as they are structurally the same as the FR's, and the facelift FR's have the same rear bumpers. A towball mounted bike rack is probably a slightly grey area, as you're not technically towing anything!

My towbar is a Westfalia detachable, cost about £180 and took about 2hrs to fit. I cant seem to find the actual towbar on the site i bought it from though
The bosal ones seem to come up a bit cheaper.
As a related question to those who have fitted towbars, Does the dash trailer indicator light work when you use an aftermarket wiring kit?

electrics kit. It just plugs straight in. No cutting of wires or anything! I got the witter fixed tow bar. Wish i got detatchable now though!

The Westfalia kit is awesome. I ordered the exact kit as quoted however, Towquipe stated that all their current stock of 7Pin kits are faulty and happily supplied an equivalent 13Pin kit instead.
Fitting of the Bosal Towbar and wiring kit from Towequipe took about 2 hours.
Yup, get the bosal with the westfalia wiring kit as recommended, If you want to use it a lot then I'd recommend the fixed rather than detachable, as I suspect it will be a bit stronger, and it is a lot cheaper. I have the detachable, but it's been permanently attached for about 3 months now!!
As an aside, the fr makes a good tow car. Had about a tonne of manure in a trailer on mine, and is takes it just fine. Plenty of power and big brakes, and the firm suspension means that the back doesn't sit down too low either. Do be careful with nose weight though. They are only rated for 50kg, and that's about as much as I can lift (briefly) on one arm!
SOrry to dig up an old thread again. I ordered a bosal ecofit detatchable tow bar part number 028-014 for my 04 plate Cupra TDI. i got a phone call from the supplier saying that these were discontinued and unavailable but could have the Westfalia equivalent. Unsure whether it would fit i took a gamble. Ive just fitted the towbar and it seems to fit perfect. You can only just see the socket stood behind the car.
I only had time to fit the towbar and chop the bumper about today so will have the wiring to complete. A quick question to the guys that fit the plug and play kit - Do you really have to run the wires to the battery??? Can you not just plug in the piggy back connections into the lights and away you go?? Not seeing the reasoning to the battery supply and a few of the other bits??

If it's the Westfalia 13 Pin kit then no, that is only needed to keep a constant live to the plug for caravans etc... I just plugged mine into the rear lights and away I went!

The black box is the relay which makes an annoying bleeping when you use the indicators. It is also designed to filter out the CANBUS signals from cars, however, the 6L Ibiza doesn't use CANBUS for bulbs so not really needed.
I'm guessing the live feed to the battery would be for the box, but without seeing the wiring diagram, it's hard to confirm.
