hi guys this is my first turbo car and just needed some help about power upgrades really please.

Firstly i have the k03s turbo and i will not be looking to change that to the k04 that ive been reading about. so will be sticking with the k03s.

Mechanical MODS i will be doing after the new year:

1.decat downpipe and full stianless steel exhuast system
2.40mm lowering springs as i dont want anything too low. cupra r's height is perfect so i think 40mm drop will be spot on to match it.
3.direct cold air intake from bumper

Power MODS is what i need help with, i dont want a mad remap which will blow the turbo just a safe map, because my mates remaped there 1.9tdi 150/130 bhp models and there turbo blew twice with a full power map, as there was a standard map, eco map and full power map. i dont know if this is the same case with my 1.8t.

any advise and link to parts will be much appreciated.

im in leeds so does anyone know of a good place to get a map done once all the upgrades are done?

thanks in advance :)

The cold air intake from the bumper won't really help too much. The standard air feed is good enough. Get a heat shielded induction kit and TIP instead. THat will make a noticeable difference to performance and sound. That along with your decat and exhaust, a stage 1 remap should give you between 210-220bhp and will pull nicely. ****** from Hinckley or Badger5 are probably best for re-maps.

whats a TIP? where does it fit?

whats best? a standard map like from a computer software just plug and go? or rolling road map?

what about an intercooler kit from like ebay for about £200? what will that improve and the gains?

thanks for your reply :)

TIP is Turbo Intake Pipe. it connects the induction/airbox to the turbo. Have a custom rolling road map. Intercooler would definitely be a good upgrade, i'm planning one in the future. If you have the intercooler with the rest of the planned mods, you can then go for a stage 2 and be putting out approx. 240bhp. Don't forget brakes and suspension though.

thanks. i was just googleing TIP found fitting guides etc so yeh now i know. apperently makes the turbo whistle more and boost pressure constant.

ive ebayed TIP but i dont know whats good and whats not. and there dosent seem to be any forge ones. wheres the best place to look for parts like the TIP?

just wanted to know the DV on the TIP is that a dump valve? can i get a better one? what does it actually do apart from making the pssst noise?

with the stage 2 is that safe for the turbo?

yes suspension will be 40mm lowering springs as this will not be for track days or anything. and brakes i think i read about using the cupra r set up.

There are more threads like yours, do a search!

Essentials: TIP, FMIC, downpipe, proper fuel

thanks for the reply.

what exactly does the FMIC do in terms of power and reliability? and what do u mean proper fuel - like shell vpower?

Yep, use Shell V-Power, its the best for your car. FMIC helps keep the car cooler for longer so you can go stage 2 with it. THey can handle it.

As for a TIP. Forge are supposedly no better than the standard TIP. I've got an R - T E C H one and its superb. I've also heard very good things about Badger5 TIPs.

ok cool i understand.

will this intercooler from ebay work as a direct bolt on kit - SEAT LEON IBIZA CUPRA 1.8T 20v FRONT MOUNT INTERCOOLER KIT FMIC from seller turbor_evs...?

also i was reading about a N249 bypass, what does it do? ive found how to do it, but not what it actually does? and whats the best DV you can buy not expensive but i mean in terms of loudness?

appreciate your help pal :)

FMIC: lowers down AIT (air intake temp) for more power. Remap = higher boost = more heat, the smic cant handle it for too long.

Dumpvalve: Forge 006/007/008 / Bosch 710n / APR R1 (?)

yeh cool thanks for that. looked at your youtube vids and parts youve installed.

wheres the best place to get a FMIC, TIP and Downpipe exhaust system?

whats the difference between each dumpvalve you listed? and which is the loudest?

thanks for the info and nice build, did you get 261bhp out of the k03s turbo or did you swap it out for the k04?

I used Dynodaze up in Hinckley to do fit the TIP, Heat shielded induction kit and do the n249 bypass etc.... they are very good.

i will be fitting it my self so thats why i asked where to buy from but its cool ill probably just ebay it mate.

thanks

Then go for a R - T E C H TIP and heat shield induction kit.

fit it yourself.

I've also had the n-249 et al bypass. worth doing. theres loads of threads on here.

cool thanks. i was wondering will the mk4 golf 1.8 t with k03s turbo, TIP work?

yeh ive already found it, quite simple tbh just need a T joint and 1m of 4mm silicone hose and just connect it up and jobs a good one. 10mins max to complete i say :)

Don't have one myself (yet, its on the post xmas shopping list!) but I would be getting an SFS oversized TIP, look on ebay. Badger5 TIPs are very highly rated on here and other VAG sites but they only make one for the K04, maybe we should start a petition . There are a few brands, price ranges, and a lot of arguments about TIPs. IMO so long as it doesn't fall to pieces then any silicone one is better than the hideously restrictive OEM one.

Don't bother replacing the dump valve, as long as the standard one isn't leaking it does the job just as well as after market ones. If your after a bit more sound get a Forge 007 or 008. I would get the TIP and cone filter first though and see what it sounds like as I doubt the DV makes that much difference to the noise.

As for what it does, your turbo produces boost, when you lift off the throttle the throttle valve closes so the air coming from the turbo has no where to go. If there isn't anywhere for this air to go the pressure will build up and go back through the turbo, this is bad. So that's where the DV comes in, it opens and releases the air back into the intake just past the air flow meter. Other types of engine dump it to atmosphere rather than the intake, that's the ones you get the loud psssssht noise with. These engines need to dump it into the intake to work properly, you can increase the noise by getting a large silicone TIP, an open cone filter and an after market DV like a Forge. If you're that bothered you can get it mapped out so you can dump to atmosphere, or use split recirc / dump valve but a lot of people find that this just gives problems.

The N249 controls when the DV opens and closes. The DV opens by using vacuum created when you close the throttle, the N249 effectively regulates this vacuum to the DV. If you connect the DV directly to a vacuum source on the inlet manifold then you bypass the N249, this sharpens up the DVs response, gives a crisper pssssht noise and IMO slightly decreases turbo lag when changing gear, I say IMO because people debate over whether it makes much difference or not. There's a couple of ways of doing it, you can do a simple bypass and plug off the N249 hoses or you can fully remove it but that requires resistors, either way it is a quick, cheap and simple mod. Many, many threads exist on how to do it.

As others have said a simple stage one map, which technically doesn't require any mods, should give you ~210bhp and a lot more torque. With stage 2 you could be hitting 240bhp, some have got more. Going for mental stuff I think is stupid, an LCR with a stage one map gives you ~265bhp and that's a lot cheaper and faster than an LC with a truck load of mods, but maybe I'm missing the point?

Im running an Forge 006 atmospherically, it makes a lot more sound than the Bosch 710n atmospherically, believe me :)

Nice piece of info! As dazjstuart says, aim for 240BHP, the rest is icing on the cake.
