Having driven a fabia Vrs, I was impressed with the DSG. But I would never want one, always be a manual for me. Plus they are pricey and expensive to fix if they go wrong. I think they are supposed to be more reliable than before, but they still auto shift up even in manual/sport mode.

Horses for courses though.....

miss the manuel, you have more connection with the car, feels natural, but love the sounds of dsg, throttle blips when downshifting and not takeing your hands of the steering wheel when pressing on through the revs! just wondering what other people think?

I have a fl Cupra, so no choice of a DSG, but if it were an option I would choose the DSG in a heartbeat. I fully understand and appreciate how people say you lose control of gear changing and being as one with the car, but the DSG is phenomenal. It changes gear so fast you can't feel it, it's supposed to help with better fuel consumption and if you're feeling lazy or in traffic then slip it into drive and it'll do the work for you. The paddles are great.

I'm planning on having DSG on my next car, but there's a little voice in the back of my head saying that I'll regret not getting a manual.

But in reality, think I'll I'll be more than happy with the auto box. Aren't they lighter than a manual too? Or is that something I've just made up?

I got my first car with an auto in nov 2012 and i love it i don't think i would want to drive a manual again , the DSG is so smooth, when your sat in traffic there's no having to dip the clutch every minute and if you want to drive a bit more enthusiastically you can put it in manual .
My only complaint is if you driving with the box in tiptronic manual it is too easy to knock it back into auto .
Apart from that its great to drive .
My boss has a merc c250 auto and he couldn't believe how much better than the merc it was.

I always thought autos were for old people, until I drove my dads m135i. I'm 20, but I want an auto as my next car! The DSG gearbox is a great box and can still be good fun in the manual mode!

I think it depends greatly on the car and what you use it for. In a city, yeah I can see the appeal. Same with a Mercedes, the manuals aren't supposed to be any good while the autos are suposed to be great. But I live around some great driving roads (loads of bikers round here). Dropping a cog for an overtake, shifting from 3rd to 4th at speed, all that extra involvement adds to the fun.

There is no answer to this (see pistonheads forums!) DSG is probably objectivly better. Like I said before, I was impressed by the fabia vrs box. But to me, cars are subjective and I just prefer my manual box. Especially when I get my new clutch at the weekend!

I've said before on a few of the dsg threads, it's pretty nifty, changes we'll and the launch control is a nice touch, I drive the leon mostly at weekends and would certainly buy another, only gripe for me is that the S mode is pretty useless, floor it in D and it does the same and revs to redline, would like to map out the manual kickdown mode too, that's my only very small gripes..... Nothing better than flicking the paddle when down shifting and hearing the throttle blipping.

I like dsg and I like a manual, but most of all I like driving, unfortuantly with 3 kids in the car ruled out a cupra, due to speed! but with the fr dsg its fun to play, like blipping the throttle on other cars and paddleshifting through the gears , its like a petrol heads toy, it adds fun to driving! when the kids have left home, back to a cupra manual for me!

Launch control.???????

Had two DSGs, and now first manual in the R. Verdict: definitely win for the DSG in my opinion.
I miss it in traffic, I miss the quick seamless shifts and I miss my paddle shifting :(
That DSG mk3 280 is definitely in the scopes.

"Launch control" was fun the 3 times I tried it. Felt guilty every time though. Especially when I was running stg2 :)

this is my 1st dsg in 15 years of manual and i will never switch back
it does everything better and much faster than any manual
last sunday i used for the 1st time the paddles seriously, for overtaking, what a pleasure , 2 gears down and floor it :) so fast

the only thing i hate is the fuel consumption, dsg 6 is less efficient than a manual
dsg 7 instead is more efficient
there are plenty of specialists that remap the dsg now, so it should be even better

Hows launch control work Patrick ive been holding the handbrake on , didn't know about another way

Never thought I'd say this, but would not really even consider a new car now that didn't have a dsg or similar type gearbox

Would go as far as to say that in a few years time the manual gearbox will go the way of the starting handle

Launch control.???????

When engine and box are warm, turn off esp, put in S hold left foot on brake, right foot on the gas, car will rev to about 3k but will not engage gear until you release the footbrake, perfect start every time :)

Mind, you can physically feel the gearbox's life reducing by 1 year every time you do it :)
