Warming / Cooling Times?

Hey guys,

I'm new to the world of turbo charged cars (driven /NA for over 10yrs) and was wondering if anyone knew how long you had to warm the car up before being able to safely increase the speed? And how long is best to let the car cool down for afterwards? (Cupra 180)

It's often a miss conception that when the temp gauge is up to temp then so is the car. This is wrong. Normally as a rule of thumb for me, I will only give it the beans about 5 mins AFTER the water temp gets up to temperature.

Water and Oil warm up at different rates.

Best is to install an oil temp gauge, it takes quite a while for the oil temp to reach 90 degrees. Coolant also takes longer than the gauge lets you see!

I've got a liquid gauge and I find it takes the oil upto 3 times as long as the coolant to get upto 80-90ish

I've just been reading other threads on here and someone has stated that it's 15mins / 5 miles to warm up and staying out of boost for the same time on the return journey should be ok....is this correct?

How hard are oil gauges to fit?

That's roughly about right yeh, will obviously vary depending on temperature outside.

Not that hard, you need a sandwich plate or you can stick it in the blanking plug above in the oil filter housing.

Then its wiring back into the cabin.

Can you fit the oil temp sender from the top of the engine bay or do you need to get underneath? That's the last thing I need to do

If you can get the blanking plug out: top of the car
If not (like in my case), below the car (install sandwich plate)

Where abouts is the blanking plate? Is it just a bolt??

once water up to temp another few mins.

and simply take the last few miles easy rather than driving alike a loon then sitting in a carpark on tick over for 5 mins, - it just looks so pointless, particularly when the people you have wizzed past park up and get where they are going before you.

When my coolant is at 90 my oil is only at like barely 50 or 60 I don't boost to any degree until at least 75-80 then it's all good, warming down I cool down to 80's after a hoon, then take a bimble off boost for the last 5 mins of my journey, it's more allowing the turbo housing and passageways to cool so that after shut off the oil does not burn and block the oil ways around the turbo.. Best way to cool off is to keep driving not sit there this just makes the car hotter, same for warming up just take it steady and have if anything "Mechanical Sympathy" would you like to be woken up and done in the bum as soon as you've woken up lol nobody would

So many answers and so many right and wrong ones, it's easy start your car drive it under 3000rpm of boost for around 10 Mins, why you ask drive from cold because your gearbox oil different oil won't get warm really sitting on the drive now will it, so just drive it and enjoy as for cool down that's a no brainer the last 3 mile of a journey keep it off boost and under 3000rpm simples mate, that's all just in my experience of driving moded and unmoded turbo cars for 20+ years,
