Help Changing Discs and Pads

Hi All,

Couple of questions...

Had my 2012 Sport Tech ST 170 for nearly year (got it with circa 12,000 miles on it and it's now at 28,000)

The front discs are warped and the rear discs have massive surface area chunks of metal missing from them, so need to change them.

I've done discs, pads, shoes, drums on old cars...

I am assuming the front discs and pads I can do like any other, unbolt etc, push caliper piston back in by brute force with brake fluid cap off...

The rears...do I need a tool to wind the rear callipers in? Is there a How To for these brakes?

Also does anybody with a facelift 170 ST know what size the discs are? They are bigger than standard aren't they?

28k is a very low mileage to have this problem. Have you spoken to the dealer as it is still under warranty.

Thank You, I searched Exeo Discs on the forum and couldn't find anything hence why I started the thread, sorry.

They are wearable items though, won't it be hard to try and get SEAT to stump up?

No need to apologise Jamie, I remembered the the other thread had been on here.

The disks and pads may be wareable items but its worth a chat with the dealer, nothing to lose.

Most Of my disk changes have been about the 70k mark. My Exeo mileage is to low to form a judgement about the brake wear on it. My previous passat had disks on the front at 75k and sold it at 96k same disks on the back and my x-type has just had its second set of fronts at 143k (wife's car now) Your cars mileage is to low for you to need all the brakes replacing unless you drive (and stop) like a hooooligan. or there is something wrong with it.

Sounds to me like there corroded from either been stood and not used hard enough that will speed up the corrosion or the calipers or pads are sized if that's the case then the front will be working harder to stop and getting hotter which can cause them to warp. Make sure when fitting new parts that all sliders are nice and free Pistons slide back nice and pads are free in the carriers. I recommend Pagid brake discs and pads. The discs come with a coating to slow corrosion in the exposed areas of the discs you can buy these from euro car parts.

Just one quick word of caution when rewinding the piston. It's worth clamping the flexible hose and opening the bleed nipple on the caliper when rewinding. This makes sure the fluid isn't forced through the system in the wrong direction. Now I'm not sure if it's ok or not in the Exeo, but I know it causes damage to the little one-way valves in Meganes, as the wife has one and I was warned by a friend who is a Renault technician.

By clamping the hose and opening the bleed valve, you'll definitely avoid any bother.

Does anyone know what the difference between the brake sizes are? Obviously calipers and discs/pads are different, but lets say i wanted to upgrade my 280/288mm discs to the 312mm version, would I just need the calipers and carriers and a set of discs/pads. How is the offset for the caliper achieved? I would guess just from the carrier thus allowing this easily to be achieved at the factory. But does anyone know?

My brakes look puny under the 18" wheels, they do stop the car adequately, though they do feel a little lacking for a fairly large car

I agree with DaveMc 're. The brakes feeling a little...inadequate for the size of the car. Anyone got a step by step with part numbers for upgrade to the top spec discs & pads?

If you get discs bigger than the 312's, what size spare wheel do you use?
312s are the biggest I can fit under 16" steel wheels.

When I had my Exeo, I picked up some Audi A6 brake callipers (and discs) that are about 323mm IIRC.

The callipers are also twin-pot, and huge!

Never actually got round to fitting them, and they're still stashed in a box in the shed if anyone's interested in them.....

I was going to get them powder-coated and the seals replaced. Might do that, and then stick them up on ebay!

Rear disc corrosion

I have a 62 plate ST with 10k on the clock, I have also got excessive corrosion on the rear discs , I believe this may be down to little or infrequent use as said before. It would be best to get your dics and pads changed sooner than later. It is a nice easy job.

Andyj, the setup that you have mentioned, is this a direct fit for the Exeo? Do you know if you would have to change wheel offset etc?

Hi Dave,

As far as I'm aware, from the research I did, the A6 brakes fit the Audi A4 (B7) hubs/suspension.

As the Exeo is based on the A4 chassis, they 'should' fit. But I can't confirm it as I never got round to fitting them before I sold the car!

Managed to find the ebay description from when I bought them in 2012!
