Can't get my head around this...

2.0TDi CR170 Facelift Exeo ST Sport Tech

So the car when I bought it, was on long life servicing, the vehicle told me it needed a service at 19,909 Miles.

So I took that in April this year and in the service book and sticker on the car, the dealer has put 29,909 miles or April 2015, which ever is sooner.

So that's the Fixed servicing. Yet the car...is now on 30,100 miles and it's still saying thousands of miles before next service.

What do I do?

I've tried reading up and some of the Exeos have an oil quality sensor fitted or something? Does mine have this?

Help!! :)

Hi, I think the dealer has made an error and presumed 12 months or 10,000 miles for your car service. The same oil is used on both types of servicing but later cars have the oil sensor and if you are happy that your usage of the car is suitable for long life, go by what the car tells you. My car is used mainly for short journeys and I use the Annual Service for peace of mind....Julian

Thanks Julian...

I have a new friend who works for VAG up country, I asked him this after I posted and also rang a highly recommended VAG specialist close by to me.

Apparently the oils are different, on my friends system there are 2 different oils he says, one for variable and one for fixed, he sells parts to dealerships all day everyday, possibly different make ups for the oil then?

So the car is a variable service vehicle, it knows when it needs a service and the chap explained it all to me, how the car works out when it needs one, such as how quickly the oil temps change etc.

So I called this specialist VAG indy and he said either way, the dealer has missed something. They have either now put it on fixed servicing in the book but not reprogrammed the car.

Or the mechs did a long life service but the admin staff filled the book in wrong, but then we don't know what oil has been used in it.

I mentioned the dealer in question and he gave a knowing chuckle, I said I bet you hear about these quite often, he said I can't comment but I'll just say I gracefully listen when their customers call us

Hopefully, if they are as good as the recommendations and as nice as the chap I just spoke to. I'll be set for any tricky jobs going forward.

Going to ring the dealer in questions and see why this discrepancy has occurred. Will keep you posted.

Hi, the only oil I can find which is suitable for VW Diesels with Particulate Filter is Spec 507-00. Shell Helix Ultra 5w30 conforms to this and I can't find anything on the Shell site that supersedes this...Julian

Thanks Julian,

I just called the main dealer as promised and unlike every other dealing I have had with them I was met with a great lady on reception who knew what she was talking about.

she said to me, the books been filled out wrong, don't worry about it, she said all the diesels get fully synthetic long life oil put in them and that the SEATs they usually service are all 10k and whoever filled the book in, just did it automatically.

She said not worry, the car is fine, the warranty is still intact as it's just a mistake in the book and if a claim needs to be made, they'll see it's actually on properly on the system.

Result :)

I've had a few SEATs and my local dealer has always put the cars on 10K/yearly servicing. I don't mind as personally I think 2 years is too long for an oil change, however it sounds like you rack up more miles than me and are only going 12-18 months between services anyway.

I had a Golf as well and it was on Long Life servicing when I got it @ 82K & 4 years old but again it had been serviced yearly, however I switched it to yearly servicing as I only do 10-15k per year.

Dealer said Oil was the same and confirmed by the handbook stating 505/507... (depending on VAG I've owned) for top ups regardless.

Thanks guys,

I have it confirmed that the long life oil is a fully synthetic oil 5w30 'low ash' whatever that means and fixed servicing is usually on a 5w40...

Had this told to me by my friend mentioned above and vag specialist, it's not necessarily the weight of the oil, it's this low ash thing that makes all the difference.

I'm going to drop the oil myself Inbetween longline services...we're wacking on the miles so can't be paying for 2 full services a year.

Tbf...once it's out of warranty, I'll get all the genuine vag spares and service it myself, we'll be keeping the car for as long as possible so as long as I know it's looked after and is being treated properly I'll be happy.

Any advanced bits and pieces like timing belt when it comes up will either go to the dealer or specialist.

Mine is on the variable Long Life, but like you there was some confusion because of the same reason, also on mine, the car notified me of brakes needing service, filter changes etc which I think all contribute to the service countdown, you only see this detail if you click through to the relevant screen!!
