Is there actually a point to having a side light feature on these? From what I can they are the same as the DRL's just not as bright ....

Yep. That's exactly what they are. Sidelights position just dims the DRL and switches on the rears and numberplate lights. Can't say I've ever bothered!

Nah me neither, seems pointless. May as well just switch the rears and number plate lights on with the DRL's (we have front so why not rear DRL's as well while we're at it) and just have DRL'S and mainbeam options

Brake lights are probably easier to see in daylight if the tail lights are not on.

True.
To be honest, I don't really get the point of DRL's. They can claim better visibility (which has I agree anything with lights is easier to see) but if you can't see a car in day light........

Blame the idiots that drive around at 8am on a foul/wet winters day... you know the ones where it's pretty dull or dark and 90% of everyone else has their lights on.

Dont think I've ever used the side lights on mine, its either DRL or full lights as I have mine in AUTO all the time... still, even when my lights are on my DRL dont dim that much any more ;)

Assuming if sides are put on manually when there is less daylight they become brighter. Just stick them in auto. Wheather auto goes through sides, then main dipped stages i have no idea.

I came here looking to ask just this. I don't have auto lights on my Leon. So just to clarify, side lights turns on dimmed daytime running lights, rear lights and number plate lights, whilst in the position 0 it's just the brighter daytime running lights with no other lights?

Side light, you mean park light?

Exactly, not side lights, parking lights!

Quote from Highway Code, parking at night:

All vehicles MUST display parking lights when parked on a road or a lay-by on a road with a speed limit greater than 30 mph (48 km/h).

I suggest you read the owners manual. The parking lights you're talking about are usually operated by the indicator stalk, unless you want them both on. Parking lights are also merely 'a function of' the sidelights. Just because they operate the parking light when the ignition is off doesn't mean they stop being a sidelight the rest of the time. Some people use the sidelights when in multistory car parks or tunnels, for example.

I know which lights you are talking about, but I might be wrong, I think those single side parking lights are not legal in the UK.

Standing by to be proved wrong.

That'll need someone more knowledgeable than I, I'm afraid.

It may be that you're right and you should use both, I'm not sure to be honest!

Just tried mine, mines don't dim at all when I switch to the sidelights, same brightness!
