The 6 speed gearbox in the Exeo 143 bhp does anyone know if it takes a 75-80 gl-5 spec or a 75w gl-4 spec....

I have put in 75-80 gl-5 with lucas transmission fix but it's not fixed the 3rd gear notchyness this only occurs every so often only on the up shift never on the downshift and according to 2 different gearbox specialists it's not a fault with the box.

So thinking of putting 75w gl-4 in there?

75w gl-4

I use Castrol Syntrans Transaxle (TAF-X) 75W-90 (API GL-4+ and VW 501.50) in my gearbox.

Some people with an Exeo use 75W-80 (Castrol Syntrans V FE 75W-80) to ensure it's easier to change from gear 1 to 2 when the oil is still cold especially in winter time.

You can use Castrol's Oil Selector to find the correct fluids for your car: http://oilselector.castrol.com/c/uk/eng/search

Update - for those that are interested put in some titan 75w gl-4 the gearbox is a lot better 2nd gear goes in now a lot smoother and the 3rd gear notchyness is a lot better not perfect but don't hardley notice it now!!!

Can't believe the difference going from a gl-5 75-80w to a gl-4 75w its unreal the difference its made.

Try some Genuine VW/ Audi Oil. I put all sorts of "Special" performance Oils in the GB of My Fabia VRS and it was never as slick as when I filled it up with genuine VW stuff. The Genuine VW gear oil I used in the Fabia GB was really thin and almost clear - not yeloow / gold looking at all.

Richdot. I think GL4 is the key !... Glad Titan stuff seems to be working for you!

Well it worked wonders for the first 4 days or so now it's not as smooth better than it was before but not 100 % ....

I'm not worried about it as most people you speak to who has a 6 speed german group gearbox say it's notchy and not silky smooth.

Just replaced the oil in gearbox, very pleased with the changes now, I put Febi GL-4 75W in, a very easy job, just need a decent floor jack and an axle stand for safety.
As many people have found, 3 lt drained out but put only 2.2 lt back in and it started to run out, I jacked it up some more and put the 3 lt in, lowered it back down nothing came out.
I got the GL-4 off Ebay, only £24 for 3 lt, well worth it for the smooth change.

Glad your box is better after the change... I actually went onto the oe spec oil from tps found it much better... Still like any other German group gearbox it's not silky smooth still a little notchy sometimes. But all in all happy with it

Maybe using Febi is the key?

It's already had febi stuff in was actually more notchy than it is now... It's fine at the moment still a little notchy on the odd change that's about it really.

Very confusing!!!!

Very confusing yep... I've tried every transmission oil going in the box, even additives, when I had the clutch and dual mass done on the car I bought oe fluid from TPS this has made the difference much better now.... For me there is a lot of truth in what people say about transmission fluid you can't beat the oe stuff.
