Hello all, I was wondering if the 'shim modification' that you were able to do on the 02M gearboxes to reduce the longitudinal play on the input shaft can be done on the 02Q boxes, as mine has the same plastic cover on the end of the box. I have a pulsating under the pedal under low rpm's in reverse or first.
Cheers.

You can do it, but its not an oem solution, you have to make the shim yourself (fairly easy though)

The gearbox is already much improved in that department, and there isn´t alot of play in them from the factory

I see, do you think the shim that was sold as a fix for the 02M boxes will fit on the 02Q?
I've rang around a few gearbox specialists in my area, from the symptoms I've described they all seem to think it's play in the input shaft, as well as a knackered thrust bearing.

No the shim won´t fit, its way to thick.

On the 02M gearboxes, there was a typical a ½ cm of play. On a 02Q, there is maybe 1mm, sometimes a tiny bit more (same as the 02M with the shim installed) If you make it 100% without play, you will have accelerated wear on the inside gears.

The thrust bearing is a good guess, i would get that checked out first, cause if that gets servere, its new engine time....

Thanks for the info, I will get a thrust bearing ordered, I can drop the box off and investigate my self.
Curious as to why it would be new engine time if the thrust bearing gets real bad? Only just changed the clutch flywheel and thrust bearing a mere 3,000 miles ago.

We are talking about 2 different things.

Thrust bearing is the bearing holding the pressure from the slave cylinder (what you call thrust bearing) on the crank. If you need to change this, you need to remove the oil pan and third main crank bearing cap.

What clutch/flywheel are you running?

I see what your talking about, I have the sash's clutch and dark side single mass flywheel, I had the flywheel lightened and balanced before fitting. I was referring to the bearing that is changed when fitting a new flywheel like/clutch. Is this not part not refereed to as the thrust bearing?
