Seat Ibiza 1.4 2009 Engine Management Light

We have a Seat Ibiza 1.4 2009 that my daughter has recently been learning to drive in

Since it has only been doing short journeys the engine management light has come on and refuses to go off. It is due its MOT next week and I wonder will this cause it to fail?

I have tried the battery disconnect which didn't' work

The car runs perfectly otherwise

I'm not sure as I've not been for an MOT where I've had an EML on but I think these days it could be a fail yes.

Do you not have a friendly local garage who can read/reset the code for you for cheap?

Failing that get yourself on amazon and buy yourself a cheap OBD bluetooth reader and reset it yourself using one of the many apps available (assuming it's nothing serious) before then MOT!

Something like this should do the job if you have android, or the wifi version should work on iOS

I use the carista app on my android and have used it to reset many codes on both my car, the girlfriends mini and my mates golf mk5.

I'm not sure if you need pro to actually reset the codes, there's other free apps though I think.

Carista does a week pass for $9.99

I guess you can tell that it worked.
It arrived at 8pm last night, too dark to go out there at that time but first thing this morning, after watching a quick YouTube video and hey presto the light has disappeared. Let's just hope it passes it's MOT now.

Oh and the fault code was to do with the exhaust sensor (before I cleared it that is!)

I'd guess that unless you are very lucky that car will still fail for that! If you pass you will probably need to replace that sensor - you did note down which one it was? Only buy genuine sensors!

Edit:- I was saying that as if it was an infrequent failure, that light would have got off again by itself and it sounded that it didn't.

Well she didn't fail on the emissions so I guess it's a dodgy sensor causing the light to come on but she failed on the headlight beam image on both sides - that'll teach me to buy cheap bulbs

Hum, could have been the cheap bulbs as they are never a good idea, more likely it was down to how these bulbs were fitted into the lights as VAG seems to have gone off in a strange direction wrt using "easy to change bulbs correctly" head light fittings!

Edit:- maybe check the Lambda reading recorded on the test sheet, I find that is usually a good guide as to what is happening to the Lambda probe performance.

How can I check the headlights before taking it back for retest now that new bulbs are fitted - I don't want it to fail a second time :O

VAG is Volkswagen Audi Group... think it's actually just Volkswagen Group these days but everyone calls it VAG just the group of companies as below so used to refer to all the cars in that group with similar parts/platform in a lot of cases.

Typically when you get an MOT carried out, the issuing garage will hand you back a summary sheet from the emissions test, this will detail the emissions and might let you see when things are starting to head towards a fail situation when comparing it with previous sheets.

Headlight bulb fitting, I and others find it very easy to fail to locate these bulbs correctly in their fittings, especially when dealing with the headlights with two bulbs. I find that you should always attempt to look in from the front of the headlight while fitting the bulbs to make sure that they are being located correctly, ie look right! I think that this problem is the cause of most of the dazzling headlights we encounter while driving around.

On the emissions the previous MOT was 1.27 1/m with the limit being 1.50 1/m, on the test carried out on Saturday it was 1.23 1/m - is that better than a year ago, I'm guessing it is! So in my mind the sensor is the definition fault here!

Off outside in a minute to check those headlights. I am going to tape the garage door to the beam of the old headlights (the cheap bulbs) before changing and checking the fitting of the new bulbs and seeing if there is any difference. Hopefully there will be and the retest will be a big fat PASS!
