Interior light change

Hi, bought my first Leon FR a few weeks back and decided I wanted to change the interior light to led bulbs.....this may be me just being thick...
How the hell do you get the cover off to change them?
I've had a look in the manual but can't find anything and searching forums I can only find the older ones

surely you don't have to remove the whole unit to take a bulb out?

Any help would be great!

Go I found that a flat head screwdriver to pop the lights out and then just unplug them and remove the 501 bulb and it works fine.

I'm havering redouble getting the led to work. Theyre 501 w5w but they squeek when I put them in. It also blew the fuse in the unit in the boot.

Can anyone help me with this?

Trim removal tools from eBay or similar make this a much easier job and save you potentially damaging/scratching trim.....

Footwell bulbs - just place a small flat head/precision screw driver under the light cover, at the end closest to the engine bay and lever it out. The plastic around the cover is fairly robust so you can apply a bit of pressure as it's fairly tight. Then remove the light unit and unplug the connector so you can replace the bulb away from the footwell as it's not the easiest place to access. No real need to use a trim removal tool as the trim is hidden and the gap between the light and surrounding trim is quite small

Vanity lights - you may wish to use a trim removal tool as the trim is a bit more fragile and any scratches would look unsightly. IIRC there is a small notch/recess where you can insert trim removal tool. There's a spring clip holding the light in place.

Glovebox - again similar to the footwell lights, just get some leverage and prize it out/off

Front ceiling/dome lights - although both lights have their own lens cover, the whole panel covering both lights and switches is the one you want to remove. Again, a trim removal tool is helpful here. Insert the tool and gentle prize the trim downwards towards the gear lever, there's several small plastic lugs around the panel so work around the trim until each is free.

Rear ceiling light - I removed the whole unit with a trim removal tool, you need to get it in between the headlining and the bezel and lever downwards towards the rear seats. The clips are quite robust so a little more persuasion is needed. Disconnect the whole unit and you're left with a sealed box in your hand. There's 4 lugs keeping the lens cover in place, gently prize those open to get access to the bulb. IIRC the lens cover can only go back one way due to the shape of unit.

Boot light (mines an ST) - Insert trim removal tool into the edge closest to seat backs and prize the light outwards towards the middle of the boot.

Hope this helps. Sorry it's a bit vague but I'm doing this from memory.

The front ones use a plastic card to pop off the piece of plastic around the 2 domes. The rear ones use a small flat headed screwdriver. The ones it footwells, glovebox and boot use the screwdriver but they're a bit more awkward to change as you have to take the assembly apart to access the bulbs.

Has anyone has the issue of the front lights glowing dim when the doors are closed and how did you fix it?

I soldered a resistor in on the LED to take the extra load, job done

So I went to change my footwell leds to 501 red only to discover the oem leds aren't 501 fit.

How strange! They're a wierd looking thing.
I changed the standard bulbs to led in mine and bought the 501 fitment like you have in the pic.
Could you purchase the normal bulb style units and put in your new led bulbs.

I've been looking in the golf scene. I have found a supplier in the states who has oem style red leds. Waiting for shipping quote and will way up which option to go down. The red felt tip pen trick is a clear favourite at the moment

Kiddo, did you find a supplier or solution in the end? I stumbled across the same problem as you, and can confirm that the red Quality Street wrapper over the lense is not a good fix

Just paint the 5050 led chip or chips with a thin coat of red nail varnish, does the trick

I changed my interior bulbs to LEDs last week, really happy with the results so here's the bulbs I used for my 2014 5dr FR:

36mm Festoon for interior rear (and vanity mirrors if you so wish):

If I could change one thing, I'd probably use a slightly brighter bulb for the boot (e.g one of these: http://www.horizonleds.co.uk/interi.../T10-501-W5W-smd-led/t10-501-w5w-canbus-9-led) but as they're bought in pairs I've just used what I ordered above and it works fine.

thanks guys! just ordered two sets of the festoon bulbs, a set of the w5w bulbs in red for the footwells and 2 sets of the 9 led ones, will the 9 led bulbs work for the number plate bulbs?
