Hi i'm new to the forum. I'm looking at buying a mk5 Ibiza to mainly run back and to from work (8 miles each way).

I've recently purchased a 2007 BMW 118i with the N43 engine and found out the hard way these engines are very very troublesome luckily i managed to get my money back from the dealer as the vehicle was faulty, the reason i'm mentioning this is because this could of been avoided if i'd done my research. Is there any specific years or engines to stay away from with the mk5 Ibiza ive heard people say some engines are prone to cam chain snapping ?

If you are using that next car mainly for an 8 mile commute, then go for a 1.4 16 85PS engined car, that is a petrol engine, it is a basic but reliable engine and would suit that use.

Edit:- getting a car with a 1.2TSI would be a lot more fun, but maybe some extra grief due to many design issues that caused VWG to bin that engine after a few years, not that from late 2014 or early 2015, a different engine design was used, still a 1.2TSI but this time a 16V version with a belt driven cam shaft and the turbo fitted behind the engine instead of at the front of the engine - for that engine "so far so good"!

Yes i would be using the Ibiza mainly for 8 mile commute, what car would i find with a 1.4 16 85PS engine, i should of pointed out i'm looking at spending around £4000 so i think a 1.2TSi between 14 - 15 is out of my price range

For that length of commute, stay away from diesels, it will only cause you problems.

You should be able to find a reasonable 12 plate Ibiza Toca/Sport 1.4L for that money.

Ok thank you, are the earlier 2009 - 2010 Toca/Sport 1.4L ok too?

Am i right in what i'm saying about cam chain issues?

I have not seen much for reliability issues with those engines at all. Seems a solid engine.

All the MK5 Ibiza's share the same 1.4 85PS engine, this was not changed with the facelifts, so a 09/10 1.4 85PS will be the same as a 12-15 85PS engine. This engine was introduced on the 06 MK4 Ibiza (previous generation) so has had plenty of time to be improved as well.

Brilliant i'm in the Crewe/Sandbach there isn't many around me but i'm going to keep looking for one on autotrader and ebay.

Maybe this is exactly the right time to go looking for a good used car as there must be quite a few about to be handed in as partex's?

So go on, annoy a few main dealers to see if they have any coming their way for soon?

I will do, do these come in DSG ?

I don't think so, some Polos for that time did have some sort of auto box with that engine though, why not keep it simple - more reliable that way?

I agree the main thing is reliability for me at the moment iv'e had some bad cars over the past couple of years :(

All of the ibizas with dsg may come with gear issues.
Other than that I would stay away from those coming with the 1.4 150 ps (that is turbo charged as well as supercharged).

If I were you, I would not worry about some of SEAT's colours, style can come in all colours, colour is one issue that I have with VW, my wife's previous Polo was spec'd up in silver, not by any desire for silver, but lack of any proper "good" and/or bright colours! Also, her current 2015 Polo, again spec'd up in silver, same problem again!!

If the car has single din stereo and start-stop, it would be very hard/impossible to get the right parts required to relocate the switches if you later want to get a 2-din headunit.

I would recommend the Cupra 1.8tsi Black in Monsoon Grey with Alcantara trim.
It's powerful, economical, refined, reliable and fantastic value for money. :snack:

I have the 1.2 TSI 64 plate CBZB and its brilliant. I can not complain. It pulls awesome for a 1.2 Turbo, economical when I need it to be and overall a good engine. I have some suspension issues at the moment but they are not engine related
