Windows opened by themselves

I had a similar thing happen today. I've started holding down my lock button to fold my mirrors when parking. It's been fine for two weeks but when I did it today my windows opened instead. I had to get in the car and start it to close them. No idea how I did that.

I’ve enabled chirp on unlock and window close on rain detection too.

Mine's done this twice in the rain. On both occasions the key has been locked in a safe with nothing touching it. This evening's episode has resulted in a wet interior. The dealership will be asked tomorrow to fix/recode and give it a full valet. If the answer to either is negative, I'll pay an early get out on both leases and switch to a 340i.

Happened to me last week, came out of work after a nightshift and the windows were down. It was -6 C and had to scrape the inside of the windscreen

Looking on google, its a known issue on VAG cars when its either humid or very cold.

After putting my dummy back in, I went out to dry the inside. Everything was switched to warm. Except for drips from behind the internal door handles, which is slightly concerning, everything else seems dry. I'll still take it to the dealership, so there's a record of my reporting the fault, should any switches give up at a later date.

Mine has done this once too, came out of Tescos and all the windows were down. Had been at my girlfriends the night before too so all my stuff and work laptop were on the back seat.

Initially put it down to the unlock button getting pushed in my pocket and causing it, but seems it might be a known problem, it hasnt done it since though. However do seem to remember that it was a very warm day

This seems to be a ghost in the machine for VW - I have seen reports of this across all marques and had it happen to me in my Audi A1; always when it's raining.

I have disabled the convenience opening in settings. Obviously though, the windows wont open/close with the key press.

I've had this many times when I had an Octavia VRS, the Skoda dealer coded this out somehow so it never happened again, and when I bought my Leon FR I got the salesman to sort that out before I even drove it off the forcourt - no idea what he did to do it, but so far it hasn't happened..... yet

I see a lot VAG with glass repealed on parkings.

PS:

For MK5 – MK7 VAG cars, to reset the anti-pinch:
1) Ignition on, engine not running.
2) using manual control, pull up on window control (first detent) and hold until window fully closed + 2 extra seconds
3) using manual control, push down on window control (first detent) and hold until window fully open + 2 extra seconds
4) repeat 2 above

Do this for each window. This relearns the torque settings and the window extents (what is open and closed). By first detent, I mean use the manual window open control. Pulling up to the second detent will engage the automatic open/close thingy which is what you're trying to fix.

Imagine going on holiday for two and getting back to all windows down on your car!


I read someone that electric windows will open automatically if car falls under water as a safety device to help people get out. How true this is I don't know.

This happened on my new Ateca a couple of weeks ago. The mirrors were still folded and I'm sure the little red security LED was still blinking.

It never happened on my Cupra but that was the SC.

I have seen this same behaviour reported on various VAG forums - Skoda, Audi and now SEAT. And always when it's raining. It happened to my Audi A1 once too - no chance it was an accidental bum-press of the key - it was only one window down. I think there's something to this.

Has anyone seen this confirmed?

I went out to the car 40 mins ago to find the passenger window down by 6 inches. Car locked. It rained quite a lot overnight so that door card, seat, my jacket, dash edge, floor mat, all soaked. Mostly beaded water on the plastics due to the interior cleaner I use.

Didn't notice the window open when I left the car. Drivers side shut. Key was out of range unless they can penetrate 100 ft through multiple Victorian thickness brick wall.

My Cupra is now well over 4 years old, and it pisses with rain here in Scotland a lot, never have found open windows after any of these monsoons.

Like @Seastormer my 4 year old car has not done this.

I have seen coding for rain closing but most don't have the right sensors for that to work.

However i have seen this issue on Fords & Range Rovers in those cases my understanding was water was getting into the electrics that caused Windows to open and or Alarms to go off.

It's happened a couple of times to me and I always assumed that it was something pressing on the key fob causing the convenience opening to activate. The trouble in my case is that it opens the sunroof as well as the windows and there was one occasion when it had been raining all night..

I've now disabled the convenience opening and it hasn't happened since.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, if there's a newer thread let me know!

This just happened to my '16 cupra. Got a text from my neighbour at 6:30 telling me my windows are down. Of course it's been pissing it down all night, but not too heavily. You'd expect to see the interior soaked, but it was just the door cards and sides of the seats that were wet.

At first I thought I must have lent on the keys the day before, but all the doors were unlocked, and my keys hadn't been in my pocket since I got home from work in the afternoon. Now I think it must have happened near the time when my neighbour noticed it.

Actually this happened to a colleague of mine whose Leon FR estate's windows went down during a storm in the work car park. We both decided he must have lent on his keys in the office, but now I'm starting to think that it happened by itself too.

I will disable convenience window opening and see if that helps, but if it's some safety feature as mentioned above, then I'm probably out of luck!

After locking the car i always keep the keys in my hand when walking away, until some distance away, and the pocket them. Mrs Rooster did the opening windows thing LOADS of times! on various VAG and different models, but she wouldn't have it that it was the buttons being pressed when she put the keys in her bag, it's funny that when global closure is disabled it never happens to her
