Interested in real world MPG figures (long term average) for the 1.8 TSI engine in the Leon FR. Salesman yesterday reckoned I'd not notice much difference in economy between the 1.8 and Cupra 300...

Million dollar question....how is it driven?

I can sort of subscribe to the salesmans pitch - both cars doing identical runs the Cupra would need slightly less throttle to accelerate which would even out the economy difference. But it's never as simple as that in the real world!

For reference after 13k miles in my 290 I have averaged 31.something. That includes 600 mile motorway trips at 60mph, a track day and everything inbetween.

I've got the 1.8 tsi...
When I had 17" rims I was getting about 40mpg on a 20 mile trip to work. Mostly motorway.
But now i've switched to 18" rims i'm getting about 36mpg  (Sensible driving)
Not sure if it's the weather at the moment, or the wheels really make that much difference!

Thanks! Driving style wise I seem to have a heavy right foot, I can't get close to the fuel economy my wife gets however hard I try - but then that's no fun.

I test drove an Octavia VRS yesterday to see how it compared to the Leon. I did about 25 miles of a bit of dual carriageway and a lot of country roads and got 25MPG. As a further reference I average about 39 MPG driving my FR150 the same way.

Just curious where the 1.8 would line up against this

Still not found a Cupra to drive anywhere in the South West of England :(

I've never got under 30mpg even when driving hard.
There's a few Cupras for sale in Exeter from traders if you want travel for an hour or so!

Dales at Summercourt had a 290 last year that i test drove to get an idea for the 300. Not sure if they would have a 300 now, or if you are even close to them. But might be worth a ring if you are that way.

Tried all the dealers even up into Gloucestershire. Nothing going. There's a 290 ST in an Exeter car supermarket and a load in South Wales that's about it. It's certainly a rare beast!

It could raise overall gearing, or the tyres could be lower rolling resistance.

Have a look on some of the SEAT brochures in the section about road tax ( VED )

The emissions figures on cars with 18" wheels are higher than those with 17" wheels.
It was a big enough change that in some cases the 18" wheel option put you in to the next VED bracket.

Not a factor now with the single rate VED unless it is a company car where your BIK is based on the declared emissions.

Fair one but 4 mpg is a lot ror an inch of wheel! As for the cold i always though fuel consumption increases due to the air being more dense

Got even worse today. 32mpg on the way home.
Made a particular effort to drive economically and at a decent speed.

Something doesn't feel right here :(
Is it possible the balancing/ tracking is off because of the new wheels or wheel bearings going?

I'm with breadly, colder more dense air means more fuel burnt. Not much granted but for me I see a slight drop in mpg over colder months
