Hi all,

I picked up a 1.6 Leon SX recently and I always noticed a weird noise when turning left, like a low pitched grumbling/rubbing sound and I akwaya felt that the steering got heavier the closer to left lock it got and could make parking feel like it had no power steering.

Last week I had to have steering rack replaced because it got a very bad leak on left side and leaked a full reservoir of fluid in a matter of minutes.

I thought that this must have been the reason for steering problem, however the noise and stiffness turning left still appears to be present. The rack is definitely new.

Any ideas? Anything I can check?

Thanks

Greg

I take it you have checked the steerig fluid since the change after going lock to lock so that it has circulated. Does it make a difference from full tank of fuel to having less as my 1.4 when tank was low always felt really heavy and as soon as I filled it up it went very light.

I believe the garage did this, but I decided to do it myself. The weird noise is still there, but I dont know if this is something intefering with steering or suspension issue. The steering feels a little heavier when turning left, however the power steering oil is only up to minimum so dont know if topping up would help any.

There should be like 3 notches on the dipstick for the fluid as long as it's half way up the middle it will be fine. Could be the bearing on top mount shot? Listen on YouTube for power steering low sound and see if it sounds the same if it's not i think it could be a top mount going/the bearing is there a big gap at the top of the strut tower?

My leon made strange growling noises which turned out to be a wheel bearing. It was more obvious when steering left.
