Car Length In Front
If you can’t be arsed reading my post all the way through, feel free to skip to the last paragraph.

So shortly after getting my Leon, going on 3 years ago, I went and bought myself the Audi version of the media cables.

Why? So that the album art work appeared on the screen. With a 128gb iPhone 7 which all my music was on, it meant I didnt have to mess about with organising the memory card anymore.

Then iOS11 came along last year and ruined it, at best it charges, at its worst it crash’s the whole unit and doesn’t restart till I unplug.

If I restart the iPhone and use the old cable, it will play music but no art work. Next time charging only. So back to Bluetooth or a memory card.

iOS11 is definitely the culprit, as I’ve tried iOS10 work phone (5S) wife’s phone (6S) and a friends iphone (7). All worked until they were updated to iOS11. Now they do the same as my phone.

I’m due to upgrade phones in September and hoping iOS12 might fix it again, but I’m doubtful.

Now I love my iPhone, but I also like android.

So I’m considering a Samsung S9 as the next phone, how well does this work with the MIB1 unit via the USB connection. Does it just work like a memory card/USB stick or is it better? Does the album artwork work with the better Audi cables?

Modern Android phones will NOT work with USB with MIB1 - they use the MTP protocol for data transfer, which is not supported.
Only thing that will work then is Bluetooth, with the A2DP (or something like that...).
You can control the playing from car screen but you most likely don't get art work - Spotify kinda will work but you have to select everything you play from the phone.
Same goes for regular audio - car will be a bit like a glorified Bluetooth speaker with audio controls and a screen with texts about what is playing IF the song or source supports metadata.
MIB2 and Car Play / Android Auto are miles ahead.
I had MIB1 on my previous car and it was one of the things that made me hate that car, since music is important for me.

I have an older iPod touch running an older version of iOS to avoid this issue. I leave it in the car. It syncs with iTunes via WiFi from the driveway. Seems to work pretty well for the most part. And means I don't have to plug the phone in when I get in the car

Cheers for all the replies, been considering getting an iPod to use instead.

Was half hoping the S9 would work better. Looks like it maybe an iPhone again...

So why not use an sd card in the second slot or an old laptop hdd plugged into the USB socket.. Then all album art pops up... Providing its of a certain pixel size. I use 500x500px....

I use iTunes for my music.

Prior to iOS11 the cable just worked album artwork wise. Must be something the phone did when it sent the info.

However when I copy that same music to an SD card, half the time it doesn’t work unless I faff about resizing the artwork.

On a side note, is it a special cable that's needed? Or do you use the 32 pin cable that came with the ipod?
I ask as I have a spare unused 16gb ipod. May give it a play......

It’s the Audi version of the MDI iPod cable that came with the MIB1 head unit. I then just stuck 32 PIN lightning adapter on it.
Ok. My car only came with a short USB cable that plugs into the unit in the glove box. I'm assuming that's the one you're on about..

Or do I need one of these?

That’s the one BUT it has a red collar around the wire to show it’s the better cable.

Audi cable, red collar - hopefully you can see the part number:

This one worked prior to iOS11 with album artwork.

Seat cable, blue collar:

This never did album artwork.

This drove me nuts at first, but I have got AA working reasonably reliably on the Cupra. My I Pod has always worked fine on USB 2.
My phone is a Huawei P20 Pro running Android 8.1, there was an Android update and a phone OS update recently that seemed to make it more stable.
It is ridiculously cable sensitive though, so far it only works on a Samsung S4 USB - micro USB cable and a Huawei micro USB - USB C adapter.
I'm seriously thinking of changing to an I Phone 9 or X next time, which is a shame as the Huawei is a brilliant phone.

Might sound weird so I have a late 2014 Leon fr with tech pack now only had it a month but finally got a seat green cable so I could get album artwork and control it etc ,,,but when playing a song it stops at the end and won’t carry on unless I unpause it....2nd I went into the iPod menu on the infotainment system and video came up on the screen I and change the aspect and the pal or nstc but cannot play any videos just says no video found but they are on the iPod any idea....
