cupra with excessive noise

I have just got my cupra 300 a couple weeks ago, I found that it is quite a bit of noise inside the cabin compare to other cars i used to drive. I cant say which area the noise come from but I have to turn on the radio volume more than half to cover the cabin noise. I used to drive many cars, and I only compare to Honda accord 2003 and mazda3 2015( they are still a bit of noise but it is still ok for me).
I have notice that the FR I have driven as a loan car for a couple days has less cabin noise compare to the cupra. Is it because of the low profile tyres conti sportcontact 5p?

I find the road noise quite noticeable on coarse surfaces.

The Continental tyres are rated at 72db which is on the high side.

A reasonable switch would be to Goodyear Assymetric 3,which have one of the lower ratings at 68db.

Thank for the reply, will 4 dB make a lot of different? I have go through a few threads that discuss tyres, will keep an eye on the fb rating when the tyres need to be replace

I switched tyres too, but the PS4S’s are still rated at 71 DB but there was still an improvement.

The biggest effect for me was to add some sound deadening under the rear seats and under the boot tray. Made the exhaust noises a lot more noticeable too.

I was lazy and just bought from Halfords so the whole thing cost me about £80 in the end, but you can get more if you shop online and then you could cover the rear wheel arch’s too. I just didn’t want to dismantle that much of my new car so just stook to under the seats and boot that I could get to without removing panels.

I plan to do that too, as a fairly new car I don’t wanna remove anything just like you. Did ur car feel quieter after sound proof the rear bare trunk? And how do u sound proof under the rear seat without taking the seat out?

I took the rear bench out, that was relatively easy and not like the other parts of the car where clips might break.

From memory you yank the front of the bench upwards on both sides. You'll here it click out.

Then its a case of folding it back towards the rear seat back and prising it out of the seat belt sockets and isofix.

Its actually easier to get it back in than get it out, just get the sockets in the holes and gently just keep feeding it back in swapping sides regularly so it goes in square.

Decibels are a logrithmic scale so -3 dB is a halving of the sound pressure level. That will be very noticable (if the ratings are accurate). That's why @Damo H noticed a 1 dB change.

Tried to find a db scale that I once saw that explained it really well, but can't find it now.

Its a bit naff that tyre manufacturers use the dB scale if people don;t understand how it works, as someone might think its only 1db difference, where in reality it's not linear. But then what else could they use haha.

Sound deadening is cheaper though lol I changed tyres as the Conti 5P's are ****.

Yep - I find my 300 a lot more noisy inside than my previous 184TDi.
Deffo road noise and not engine/exhaust noise.
I am going to go the whole hog and completely soundproof the car to hopefully make it feel like a 30k car.

They are noisy cars, even to compare with the Golf. Planning to do the whole rear end on my ST, dismantling the car is actually a lot more easier than you think, just have to take some time.
About the tyres, GY Assym 3 is a really quiet tyre and performing well, used them under my GTI and was very happy!

The equivalent Golf R estate vs 4drive ST is nearly 100kg heavier, yet is a lower spec (18's, no DCC) so gives you an idea on materials and amount of sound deadening.

Shouldn't be too bad - the stuff weighs in at around 25kg

Going down to 18" rims should reduce noise quite a bit - but maybe the "look" of the car matters more?

I will add sound mat to see the result first as it is a cheaper option. have to admit that the 19 inch wheel look amazing on the car so probably not gonna change to the smaller one

Could always try these 18” wheels. Obviously depending if they suit the colour of your car.

I was going to sound deaden mine, but as its on PCP and I will be chopping it in when it is 3 years old I cant be bothered lol.
