Just annoyed I didn't use the recon route myself for 1200 pounds because as he said I get almost a rebuilt lump with him and you know what's happened to it. So I did and now all the extra stuff paid for like new rockers, 16 new valves, recut seats, etc.... all wasted as i don't have any of it.

What happens to the old engine? Is it your or has the garage decided to keep it and strip the NEW parts off it for themselves to the sell?
 
If it's anything like turbos and callipers they use the old one as a deposit again the new one. So to buy the recon engine would be a lot more if you had no old engine for them to recon and sell on in its place.

Those are small, cheap and commonly used items though, reconditioning an engine is much more expensive and somewhat harder to find a buyer for.
 
I've tried him again this morning but he was out but he's going to phone me. As he was everything I've called but still no word. I'll call him again after the school run and we will find out exactly what's going on. I'm willing to bet its a great engine from a lowmileage that's fully rebuilt so he's properly looked after me..... Lol
 
Cars ready, I can't get it until tomorrow as I can't get a lift lol.
He says it's another engine with 90k on the clock with a new cambelt... That's all he could tell me about it...... Most expensive scrapyard engine swap this has turned out to be

Sounds like I've been properly stung. He couldn't even tell me it was a recon. All this work I've paid for and where is it? On my old engine dumped or sold somewhere.
Omg I'm so pi**ed but know after tomorrow I'll still be out of pocket with a car that I've know idea how long it'll live. The most annoying thing is I wouldn't have bought a car with a swapped engine and now I've got a scrap one.
 
He now says it is a full reconditioned engine he will go through the paperwork tomoz
 
See what the paperwork says, a recon engine should come with a decent amount of paperwork showing what work has been done to it and what sort of guarantee is provided.
I'd pop the belt covers off and have a look, should be fairly obvious if it's a new cambelt or if it's done a bunch of miles.

Don't forget this guy is probably also massively out of pocket, so maybe tread carefully otherwise it'll all descend into a massive argument.

So turned up at the garage. Car out front all good except the blokes not there and neither are my keys. Reception call him to get a bad signal response of come back at 4....

No idea why and more messing me about. Wasted lift there and back and now don't think I can get back at 4 as kids have clubs and things. So another car less day and more lifts to and from work tomoz..... Aghhhh

It sounds like the guy is trying to pull your pants down. Might be worth speaking to Citizens Advice/Trading Standards if isn't sorted now. If he has stated that the engine is reconditioned, ask for documentation and proof of the work carried out.

I hope you properly kicked off that he's taken your keys with him.

Do you not have a spare set you can nip back and get the car with?
 
Ok so he called at 5.40 and says I forgot to call but it's ready. What time are you there until? He says 6. I'll leave now, got there at 5.55 he's not there only his son and recovery truck man. So I ask for the paperwork but no paperwork so I said he can bring it to me this is ridiculous. But got the keys walked to the car got in it and turned it on. Glow plug light starts blinking again. Well I lost the plot..... Stormed back, threw the key at him telling him I want it fixed it ridiculous rar rar rar rar rar rar.... He just said oh well he ain't here. The recovery man came over (who is sound and is independent) and came back to the car and confirmed it was the glow plug module that I paid 140 for and has never worked. He then will come to me Sunday himself and sort it out. I've taken the car so I can use it in the mean time.
The engine has years of oil on it so definitely not a recon as I would imagine that'd be clean.
With an engine number is there anyway I can at least tell it's the 2litre 170bhp lump ?
 
Not looked for engine number yet but on a plus side the engine pulls ok and seems to go ok. Which is something I suppose lol
 
Struggling with 36mpg aghhhhh...

32 mile trips each way through back roads but little stopping really
 
The fuel this time of the year winter fuel can drop 3-4 mpg off

I was getting around 44 mpg this time of year though similar roads to you in my old mk2.
