Sport mode

I’ve recently started regularly using an 18 plate vw GTI (6speed) and had a question about sport mode as presuming the Leon is the same.

When in sport mode the car seems to hold its gear so when driving down a straight at 60 it seems to just sit in 3rd ready for me to blast off whereas my ST focus when in sport mode the gearbox holds the gear for longer and revs higher but when you’re not booting it, it does adapt and work through the gears.

Is there something I’m missing or is that right?

I'm new to all this (only had the Cupra a week tomorrow!) but what I am doing on my commute to work is to use D for the dull bits then knock the lever back for S gear shifting for the fun bits then back to D again. Seems to work so you don't get the revs held higher than you want.

Yes that's right or certainly my experience. On the motorway I often find myself having to constantly upshift manually.

If I'm sport mode, I go into full manual shifting by knocking the gearstick to the side and use the paddles only.
This avoids having to constantly over-rule the high shift points of auto manual mode.

Wouldn’t it be better to just have a manual if you like doing all of that (for those that use Manual in sag often) that way you can do exactly what you want when you want?

Thats normal, the OEM mapping IMHO is wrong, especially on the Cupra.

Drive changes up far to early, sport far too late. I had APR TCU update on my Cupra and it was a lot better.

Interestingly my Porsche has the same issue.

Sport mode is completely feral, great in the twisty's, but sometimes you want a gear or two higher. Still, it's only a flick of the lever away.

The car doesn’t come in a manual

Aren’t they getting them at all? If they had would that had been the preferable choice?
If I consider staying in the seat fold. Earlier models are for me. Manual all the way.

Current Cupra is DSG only, I'd have much preferred a manual, but I won't miss the clutch when I'm stuck in traffic.

^^^ This for me too

Apart from stop / start traffic and town driving etc. I use the full manual mode with the paddles when out on faster roads. The changes are instant and you can always choose (and hang onto the best gear) before the bends / roundabouts etc (something auto mode obviously can't see and can result in down changes / up changes when you don't want them - e.g. mid corner).

YES GONE/GO MANUAL
Seems it will be the last time for many Hot hatches.
Wait and see in a couple of years for the RS ST or TR
Oh never mind they will be governed any way

Just buy your new car in 2020/21 and get the last of the ungoverened petrols, before they disappear for ever, that's my plan.
