Fuel is subject to tax and also sold by volume so they'll have to have their pumps calibrated correctly and I'd imagine they'll have certificates to prove it. The actual base fuel capacity will be 55 litres but if you brim the tank totally (i.e. keep putting more in after each time the pump clicks off) then you'll fill the expansion tank and the filler neck, I guess that could come to as much as another seven litres.

some may say lala land....
manual is a 55litre tank yes, but then include pipework etc i reckon you were on fumes when pulled in
some same there is overflow / reserve bit on the inside of hose entrance were theres a flap you can get to
never seen or felt to be honest myself though

prices are bonkers and not much we can do.

tesco might have a error on the rig.

I've tried it myself on a shell station. Managed to fill up to 63L, but I know for a fact that I always can fill up with around 53L+- when the fuel lamp i lid.

A friend of mine works as a manager at a Tesco Petrol station and they do need to have their pumps calibrated. I'd agree with the other things mentioned above, the filler neck etc will bring up the total. I also remember people saying about the temperature making a difference to the density of the fuel, so if its cold, then you can get more into a tank! Might just be bull s%&t though!

The temperature thing is true with fuel expansion. I think once you fill the expansion, filler / breather etc then you will be over 55l, I've filled up to about £68 worth before. Wouldn't recommend filling the breather / expansion though, if it can't expand in the designed manner it will expand out of the filler cap!

Tank Capacity

I have found this string but need some help I am having an issue with my company who say it is impossible to get more than 55lts into a Seat Leon tdi fuel tank I have managed to get upto 59.14 litre in but apparently this is not possible. Is there an expansion tank? How much fuel is in the neck? and what is venting?

regards the temperature you are slightly mislead:

as the temperature drops the petrol will become denser. (same as water - but not including ice)
But thats not to say you will then be able to get more petrol in the tank in terms of litres as this is a volume and not weight measurement.
Therefore the number of litres you can get in a tank will not change with temperature.

although you do get a bit more petrol via its density when its colder, but its not a particularly significant amount.

I have to say that 63 litres is a scary amount, - both in terms of how low you ran the petrol level, never a good idea to go really really low due to issues with pumping etc, but also as it suggests you are brimming/filling the feedpipe, and as a result some of the expensive petrol you may have paid for might not stay in the tank. Diesel wise you could also be creating a hazard for road users.

in my experience the light comes on at about 53 litres, and so if you then do 30 miles after the light is on at economical speeds (so get 30mpg after the light is on) then you are looking at 57/58 litres.
63 litres is another whole gallon.
Yes petrol stations are calibrated, - but not as often as you would think by external checks. iirc the stations themselves will check much more often so as not to be found at fault by the less regular independant tests. Its not a particularly technical check, they just fill something up which is marked up for volumes and compare to the readout.

***EDIT*** - my comments refer to a MK1 leon, but you are referring to a Mk2 i think. however they both list the capacity as 55 litres so should apply)

i can confirm that it is entirely possible to get 59 litres in a tank.
the 55 litres refers (roughly) to the amount from 'empty' to full.

given that once the warning light comes on the tank the instruction is to fill the tank as its now 'empty' then the 55 litres refers to you filling up the instant the light comes on and stopping filling when the pump clicks/not overfilling it.
But as many people drive on for 30-50 miles (dependant on fuel type) after the light comes on and people tend to fill up a bit more after the first click then this explains why you might be able to get more in.

Venting: when you put the cap on the tank filer neck it depresses a little button/valve which allows some trapped air to escape. Some people press this themselves with the end of the filler nozzle, you can hear some air escape and you can then squeeze a few litres more in.
Id not advise this myself, - many many on here will say ive dont it with no issue.. but personally id say dont do it. In anycase you will probably be able to get a couple more litres in just by waiting a short time to allow the fuel to settle and any air pressure to escape without 'venting'.

There is an overflow pipe, - how much fuel are people possibly losing if they brim it?

(i read your companies comments as a hint you might be filling something else than your car, so i would be and can understand why you might be offended by this and want to put them right).

Thank you for your response I have several people saying that 55 is not the full up capacity of the tank and with the help you have given I feel I will be able to educate them

62.37 litres @ 121.9 p a litre £75 to fill a cupra I nearly fell over especially when I'm only getting 25 mpg
I feel your pain there as my astra turbo takes on nearly 60 litres from a totally bone dry tank and none starter and I'm getting 23 to 26 at the very most..

Loving my tdi seat though as I filled that up with it clicking off twice and today I've covered 176 motorway miles and haven't got close to using a quarter of a tank yet ???
