Regardless of what happened, the driver behind should be found at fault by the insurance companies. He ought to leave sufficient space that he could avoid hitting you if you had to make an emergency stop.

Someone executing a sudden handbrake stop in front of them, would assist their defense.

Does operating the ‘handbrake stop’ bring on the brake lights? Leaving a gap works better if you get an added visual warning of a stopping car?

I always leave plenty of gap to the vehicle in front, and it does hack me off if something that obviously couldn't stop as quickly as I could, is driven a couple of feet away from my bumper. But what amounts to brake testing isn't good practice either.

Yep, I had to get out the car the other day and ask someone what the f his problem was, as it was dark, raining and he was about 2ft from the back of my car. I had a bus in front of me, so not like i could go any faster, he was just being a complete *****. Rather than get out and settle things man to man, he shat himself and drove through a red traffic light to get away.

I live in 20mph area, main roads and side roads, many appear behind me from nowhere, so Obviously too important for limits, get me down to 15, it’s only a mile or so, how much time can they save by speeding.

A karate instructor I knew when I was a kid, said run from a fight if you can. I thought why run when he could beat any untrained opponent, but he was right really. There's no prizes for slapping some w***** around, or finding out what someone lacks in driving manners, they make up for it by being a hard nut job.

Interesting discussion. I've got the EHB in my Leon and one of my kids pulled the switch when I was driving before which shocked me as I didn't realise it would activate while moving at speed, although that was only at 30mph and thankfully there was no-one behind me. Safe to say he got a stern telling off and an explanation as to why he should never touch anything while the car is being driven.

It would be interesting to know if the brake lights do illuminate when applied though.

I do when the parking brake is applied automatically (eg when I stop at traffic lights or a Tjunction), the brake lights do come on as I checked that when I parked in front of a shop window and took my foot off the brake, I could see the reflection in the shop window in my mirrors and the brake light was still on.

So I’d expect the brake light comes on in the emergency passenger braking scenario, it would be dangerous not to. Don’t know how to check it, except maybe get a mate to follow at a safe distance on an empty road and try it out!

Isn't that just the Hold function and not the parking brake?

I would be very shocked if they didn't come on! They must.
Some cars also flash their brake lights if you're doing a strong/ABS type stop.

A friends mk.3 2018 Leon used to lock the rear wheels at 70mph as his wife found out when he passed out on the motorway, thankfully it was 2/3am so no one around, she had to select N and coast to a stop.

MY2019 Leon very often switches the hazards on when stopping at the end of motorway exits..

If the hazards come on during 'normal' non-emergency braking then the driver is leaving the slowdown/braking far too late.
