We are so back (Fake TE37s)
Back in November or December, I ordered a set of Enkei T6S in the size of 7x5x17ET45 (or ET40, can't remember). These ended up getting delayed for like 3 or 4 months and Tegiwa gave me a discount and later just refunded me fully and said next time I buy something to tell them so they can give me my discount back - props to them for that, stupid Enkei apparently didn't know when they would arrive even after 4 months of delaying it.
Anyway, around this time I saw an Instagram reel about forged Alibaba wheels and thought it would be a good deal, cheaper than my Enkeis and forged and lightweight I was so down. Once I got the refund I went on wheel-size and took some measurements for fitment reasons and ended up with 8x17ET45 as a good starting point so I gave woaforged the specs I wanted: 5x112, 57.1mm center bore, the above size and offset and after a few days they sent me a picture of a 3d model to approve and after a few weeks a
video of the wheels that were made. They then sent them to me with sea shipping which is supposed to take about 2 months but it took 7 weeks for me.
I took them to Costco and got them to put on some 225/45ZR17 Michelin Pilot Sport 5s and just today they were ready. I went and picked them up, drove back home and fitted them with my wheel bolts I had bought a long time ago (honestly don't remember where but I can find out if anybody wants that info) and to my surprise, they actually fit with no rubbing and a tiny bit of clearance from my KW V1 suspension. I was very worried about this because these are pretty bulky coilovers but I got lucky and they fit with maybe a couple mm of clearance.
Here are some pictures of how close they are to the suspension:
The rear has tons of room though.
I took it for an alignment and my alignment was quite ****** up (except for the camber, those were pretty close to each other). It makes sense since I've had this car for almost 2 years and in that time never got an alignment, I wanted to get one 6 months ago but I was waiting on the new wheels and I'm pretty sure that makes a difference. The rear toe adjustment bolts are seized to the bushing sleeves though so couldn't fix the rear. Once I get a couple days I'll probably cut them out and replace the entire control arms, but its so hot outside and I need the car to get to work so it will wait, worst case scenario it needs new tyres.
Here are some pictures I took today:
I'm actually so happy with how these turned out. I suspect the car might look a little nicer with something like BBS SRs or other high-spoke count wheels but I didn't want to risk it and find out, I feel like you simply can't go wrong with TE37s, especially since they look similar to the original wheels. I reckon that's what sets this car apart from a mk6 golf, it just has a much smoother, curvier vibe than the rigid looking golf that it can probably pull off high spoke wheels a bit better. When I bought this car I was by no means a car guy and over time I appreciate Seats more and more, Leons especially just look so nice to me now and I smile a little whenever I see one on the road.
The fitment looks pretty flush too which I'm happy with, the measurements I took were a little conservative since I could have added spacers but I ended up not needing to anyway. I fully expected the rear to need spacers since it had a bit more space but I think the front actually poke out a little and the rear is more flush than the front. Overall I'm happy it A) fits and B) looks nice.
The tyres are amazing also, I have them inflated to 36 PSI front and 33 PSI rear (found those numbers on wheel-size for other
MK2 Leon's with 17 inch wheels and same tyre size) and it feels like I have infinite grip - I don't really drive crazily especially because roads here have such poor visibility that anything could be behind a corner, but in the 1 or 2 good visibility corners I can take a medium left at a solid 50 without even being worried.
Looking ahead, he needs a good clean - I was going to do it today but its so hot outside that I almost passed out (remember to drink water when you're working outside) and it would probably leave water spots before I could dry it. I also bought it some GTechniq window coating, some headlight dust covers (the ones that came with these don't fit LEDs which I installed on them, so needed different ones) and a windshield repair kit because it has some small chips from when I bought it. Kit came with 2 vials but hopefully it will do the 3 cracks I have.
Slightly longer term I plan on getting those dents in the rear right quarter panel fixed and to wrap the car, I'm thinking KPMF blue black iridescent right now since I am quite happy with the colour he is right now but the paint is old and has a lot of scratches on it and I want him to look new. Anyway that will probably cost me around 3,000 pounds so probably in a couple months.
After the wrap I'm genuinely not sure what to do with the car, maybe replace all the suspension bushings (not polyurethane) so it feels a bit smoother, maybe the timing chain tensioner because it makes noise on cold starts (though I've read this is pretty typical of this engine). I would absolutely love to engine swap this car with a 3SGE or something but I know that would take years of it sitting and I don't have a
garage I can do it in. In the meantime I might buy a semi-project car but I'm honestly not sure what I would get and car parts are expensive, I didn't mind spending so much money on this one because it is my first car and it is super reliable, but it feels like I don't have much use for another car anyway since this one is a pretty good 1 car solution.
Until next time where I will hopefully be showing you all a shiny new colour.
