So after we have all these "safety" systems that constantly distract us that we're too near a kerb when we're not, or not holding the steering wheel enough, binging at us as we've slipped 1mph over the limit, collision warning that shouts at you every time a car in front brakes to turn off the road, screens no physical buttons and menu systems just to adjust basic settings, it's now being mandated that all cars must have driver distraction warnings as well...

Good to know that if the car thinks you're not paying attention, it'll throw another distraction up on the screen to make you take your eyes off the road even more.

Anyone else think they should be focussing on the real issue of how many bad drivers continue to hold a licence, rather than trying to fix it with tech that never works the way as intended? It'd be great to see a mandatory re-test every 10 years when you renew your licence, or at least have a percentage of people renewing forced to do a retest. Especially around here where it seems at least 1/4 of drivers can't even hold their lane in a roundabout, or have the spatial awareness of a blind hedgehog in a bag.

I wonder how long it is before we go back to the British Leyland days (I think it was MG) when you had to blow into a tube (drink driving) before the engine would start and obviously now upgraded to do a drugs swipe.

The standard equipment list for the Raval includes "Preparation for alcohol interlock". This seems to be common in cars for the USA and its use is mandated by the courts after a DUI. Seems like a pretty good idea.

New VWG vehicles have a driver monitoring camera in the rear view mirror and it's frightening how much detail they can pick up.
Wow that's horrifying, the inability to turn off driver aids permanently was bad enough a decade ago it just gets worse and worse

Agreed but based on a new article I heard this week DUI is down and Drug Driving is up by a lot, by drugs they mean both prescription and illegal stuff. The Lesson they learnt back in the day is these Alcohol tests are only as good as the sensors and we all know the modern VAG motors have lots of issues with Sensors so lets hope they get this one sorted.

Agreed another reason to keep my old motor going along with the fact I still drive it not the other way round. The only tech I like is Adaptive cruise control for motorway driving especially when going through road works on the M25

If it was British Layland, that must have been just to help get the starter motor spinning though? :D

No they had the square steering wheel to wind it up first if I remember correctly.
