Very nice video from @nd-photo.nl shows removing the ground straps:

There are loads of versions of engine wiring harnesses depending on year and PR codes.
Just an example:
06K972627EJ has earth terminals

06K972627N Wiring set for engine >> - 26.05.2014 I can't see any earth terminals

So to me - it looks like they have added earth straps to the later cars.
If you send my your VIN or reg I can confirm your exact engine harness part number it you need?

This is interesting regarding coil ground wires:
If you don't have the seperate ring terminal - then I would think you have to have a ground wire on the 4th pin? You could check with a DVM.

The only image I can find is a bit grainy but I can't make out and earth terminals.
Do you have an single earth terminal around your harness? I think I would pop open one of the coil pack connectors to see where the earth goes - just for curiosity.

I'm wondering why VAG on the later engines went to the trouble of adding separate bolted grounds for each coil pack? rather than just going back to one common point.
