They have a poor definition between public roads and footpaths and drivers just obey the satnav.
A couple weeks ago, my 17-year-old son went to have a short vacation on his own, only to tell us hours later after he got his backpack and left the house. He kept on going by hitchhiking and sleeping in mosques or wherever he could find, after changed his mind about his destination a lot, and until he arrives at a 500-km-far Aegean resort town I know very well. I finally convinced him that this was too dangerous and I would feel very bad and probably can't sleep if he wouldn't share his live location with me, stay in a hostel or something and keep traveling by bus, not hitchhiking. Anyway, while he was in that town, I was watching him walking up and down very desolate hills, barren fields, with probably packs of stray dogs, and he was telling me Google Maps was showing him roads to town center from there and he thought he could use them, while those roads were probably only narrow footpaths after some point. I told him to go back to some civilized place and use town buses or whatever and he only listened to me after seeing some dogs afar. Anyway, long story short, as you said, Google Maps is no good in clearly showing the type of the roads ahead where the eyes can't see, both driving and walking
By the way, he got us worried a lot with his "adventure", but he came back safe and sound after four days of constant messaging, being unable to do anything other than that, to make sure he's not onto something bad, and I welcomed him with a big hug
