Oil Catch Can.

Ok i've fitted a nice shiny alloy catch can to my 2.0TDi in an attempt to keep intake pipework clean. At the moment it vents to air, not back into manifold.
I will keep peeps updated on the amount of oil it catches over time.

The amount of vapour/positive pressure that comes out of the tube, even at idle is quite something, but at least it isn't being sucked out by the heavy turbo vacuum when it spools up.
I've also "tee'd" the egr vacuum pipe and i'll live with cel light coming on!

Hello there mate.

I did this to my 1.9 TDI a while ago.

There seems to be some speculation as to whether venting it to the air is right, somebody told me something about the control circuit needing positive ventilation.

I had mine vented to the air through a breather filter and the white smoke coming from it caused some muted murmering at a recent rolling road day! Looked like my engine was on fire

Hi,
What control circuit is that?
As long as there is free flow from crankcase I would have thought there is no problem.
I've managed to squeeze mine in between the fuel fliter and washer filler pipe. Need some natty black hose though as I have combination of clear pipe and washing machine waste pipe!!!
Unfortunately on BKD the pipe connections are 22/25mm!!

I got mine from eBay and have filled it with 2x s/s dishwasher scourers tied up inside an old pair of tights to stop bits of rusty stainless getting sucked in.

Its been in about a month and a half and I'm gonna check inside in a couple of weeks.

Mine is going back to the inlet rather than VTA

Why do you want to vent air poluted with oil fumes back into your inlet ? The air will not get cleaned by going through dishwasher scourers ?

so what is the best way to set it up then, only one hose coming from rocker cover top to the catch tank and put a breather on the catch tank?

Yes otherwise like i said above your still putting contaminated air back in the system plus with a breather your engine can dump the excess pressure in the system which is causing most of the problem to start with.

oh right, will probably just do mine this way, also what can i block the hole off with that goes into the air intake system from ther airbox?

It is filtering the air its catching the oil and vapour contained in the air coming from the crank case vent.

I checked inside about a week after it had been installed and the "filter" had turned black so is obviously catching oil vapour.

You seriously telling me you believe that dishwasher scourers when put inside a pair of tights filter the air going through the catch can and remove the oil vapour leaving clean air? Are you on freaking drugs or something !
