REAR window repair

Hi guys

My Cupra's making me scowl and hope someone here can help.

This is my fitst post here, but I'm pretty sure this isn't covered elsewhere in the forum. The guides all seem to cover front Windows or Golfs, which are pretty different.

My LCR's rear window froze shut in the cold weather and broke when I tried to open it.

I've been able to repair and replace the mechanism without any problems but I am stumped how to re fit the glass into the mechanism. Can anybody help it has done this before?

I don't see how to fit and secure the plastic peg which holds the glass in place because the runner is in the way.

I'm obviously missing something, can anyone point out where I'm being dumb? Can post pics if needed.

Have you got the mechanism bolted in and working? and have you taken the rubber seals out of the door frame? also u need to take out the metal guide which the rubber slides in at the back of the door! The inner panel should have two holes to where u can get the fixing brakets for the window to the mechanism in line with , the glass should go in at an angle its normally a bit fiddly, you should be able to bolt it in through the holes which make the fixing point visible in the inner panel? then the metal guide back in and put the rubber in last, soapy water helps :) Hope this makes sense?!

should be two metal cast lugs with plastic inserts, you slide the glass into these and then tighten up the allen headed bots to secure.

Nothing like the front I'm afraid. Just one piece of plastic (i'll put a pic up soon) raises and lowers the window. The round hole at top accepts an expanding peg which appears to fit into a round hole (i believe) into the glass.
LCR lew90, thanks for the details but either I've misundstood or my door is different. I'll upload a picture soon. There is only one hole through to the glass. Do you mean that I need to remove the mechanism runner from the door?

Hi guys, pictures attached.

You can see in the third picture that once the mechanism is put back together there is not enough room to the peg back in to hold the glass......

Any ideas?

According to the instructions I've read, you should have a two-part expanding plug that fits into the window glass - an expanding outer cylinder and a central pin. What you are supposed to do is fit the outer cylinder into the glass , then slide the glass down into the clip. The cylinder should click into the clip, needing only a gentle tap from above. You can get the expanding peg into the cylinder through the hole in the rail.

Muttley,

Thanks a million! I'll try this in the next day or two and feed back.

Looking at the window clip I can see the guides the plug would fit into and what you're saying makes sense now. Seems like a big stretch for the clip, making me nervous, but I'll give it a try.

Thank man! :)

p.s. (if you don't mind my asking) how/where did you find that out? I find it a pain trying to find good technical info about my cars, but this board seems really great!

Elsawin, the tech instructions used by Seat garages. You can find a lot of people selling copies online - but the legality is dubious, the material is VAG copyright and the instructions are not Haynes-simple and it occasionally lapses into Spanglish. No warranty expressed or implied.

I had looked it up some weeks back as I had a sticking window. In my case it was a piece of camouflaged plant fibre stuck in the guide, and so I haven't done this procedure, just read about it.

To get the glass back in u will need to remove the runner that separates the 2 pieces of glass! leave the small glass in but it wont go in with the runner in i dont think
It might just be one fixing i couldnt tell u as havent done it for ages

All done. Thanks everyone.

Didn't have to remove any runners or anything. I pushed the plastic peg into the glass, secured it by pushing in the centre peg (expanding it). I needed a pair of long nose pliers to get enough pressure to push the middle peg in, but the. It's very secure.

Then then glass just lowers back into the door, check it's lined up properly through the hole, and then push down firmly and it clips in with a worrryingly loud 'thunk'.
