03 SEAT Ibiza 1.9 TDi Problems

Hi people!

I have a 03 SEAT Ibiza 1.9 TDi (130) and I need some advice if possible.....here's the deal with my nightmare of a car.....see what you think...apologies as its complicated.

My car has had an intermittent failing immboliser for the past 10 months or so but it has now become so bad that I have to leave it several hours or overnight before it will start. It started off when the coded key started to flash on its own and when put close to the car would lock and unlock the car, I changed the battery but no change. I evenutally just gave up and used the manual key. The problem then started as an alarm going off for a second occassionaly when I started the ignition and maybe failed to start 1 in 10 times but would start second attempt or maybe after an hour or so. I mentioned this to SEAT who to cut a long story short didnt listen to me and broke my car so that it wouldnt start again and the alarm went off if you breathed on it (they were convinced that I needed a new key and the key recoded ignoring the fact that it was intermittent.) I was without a car for 6 days while they 'undid' the damage. I have my car back and its pretty much the same but the alarm doesnt go off and it fails to start several times a week.

I once called out a recovery service to pick me up and funnily enough it started just as the guy got out of the truck. Before he went he said he had had cars before that had been sensitive to radio waves given off by cctv cameras and that maybe that was the problem. Now, I have to admit that everytime my car has had to be left overnight or at least if I had to go back a few hours later to start it, it had always been in a public car park with cctv cameras. The thing is that one night my car was in a multi storey car park and right next to the exit barriers which funnily enough also (apparently) give off a radio signal. My theory was that when the truck finally arrived it was late and the barriers were no longer being used to let cars out as I was the only sad person there.

Now all this has since been accepted as a possible BUT... I have now done some research and there is a thing called REIN.
My car always starts outside my house in the morning and until today in my work car park... (its there now as I speak)

The other interesting thing happened the other night when I went to fill up at the TESCO petrol station and I noted that the light above the car was flickering and there was a strange noise coming from the pump. When i got back to the pump after paying the car failed again so with help from a friend we moved it maybe 40 foot backward and tried to start it IT WORKED!!!! The link about the land rovers did say that faulty electrical devices do give off this REIN and can interefere with immbolisers so I do think there is something in it. Last week my car failed at another pump and I had to get help to push it into a car park close by but it didnt start that time, I went back two hours later and hey presto started no probs!! I've also parked it outside one of those residential power station thingys that are kept in a fenced of area and its failed there too, only to work half an hour later. Also its packed up outside sliding doors too which is also consistent. I'm seriously loosing my mind and dont want to give up on it just yet as its only done 60k and its got new CAM belt and new tyres!!....and anyway if i drive it to a dealer the chances are it wont start and I'm gonna look a bit suss....Plus I have morals!!!

Apparently I cant change the frequency of my immboliser as its set as standard and SEAT have never heard of the problem...so say SEAT. They also think that the 'control panel' panel with speed dial, fuel etc is not standard and may have been fitten by previous owner (It has yellow trim around the dials)

Anyone heard of this?

Anyone know how this could be fixed?

Anyone want to buy my car he he ??

I know there was a problem with Corsa's and they wouldnt start due to the immobilisor.. The fault was the wire to the 'control panel' was loose. Fix was basically take the dash apart, push in the plug and reassemble.

Dont know if this could be the same?

Do you know if anyone has pictures of the connector or the offending pins that need soldering?

It should be fairly obvious.. On the corsa it was just a big black plug that needed pushed on correctly.

Ive never had the dials off on my Ibiza though so I dont know whats its like behind there :p

Yep it turns over for a second or two and cuts out. The amber car and key symbol flashes on the dash which I guess is the key not recognising the key???

As above, once the instrument panel is out, it's a big "green connector", and there is only one big green connector. It may affect different pins as these are dry jointed caused by tension on the connector and vibrations. If you can, re-tin the lot.

it'd start in the morning, go down the road, switch off ignition, say popin a shop, come out an the thing was immobilized, could be anything from a few minutes to one time 5 hours sat on a army base after finishing work. got me mate to pick me up, went back next morning and it started first time, got home turned engine off. locked car up got back in and would be immobilized. this got worse over about a year until it drove me nuts enough to dip me hand in my pocket. new immobilizer fixed it but expensive as it's built in behind the clocks in the dash.

p.s i don't think you can disable the immobilizer cause its built in the ecu??????

anyone got a file format guide on changing out the turbo on a pd130?

Hi,

I have the same problem with my PD130, and found it to be a bad soldering contact behind the speedo! When the immobilizer key flashes, turn the ignition off completely, push down on the 120 mph mark with a bit of pressure and at the same time turn the ignition on! It works for me every time!

Hope this helps

Follow this thread written by Roanna he saved my car!!!!! I did everything he described and its been nearly three weeks and all good (touch wood)

Hi there,
Don't know if you've got your problem sorted out yet,,,, but,,, last night after months of trying to fix the same sounding problem with our 02 Ibiza 130 Sport, i again took clocks out & found damn near all the terminals at the rear of the clock panel to have parted company. We resoldered every one of them,,, which actually only took 10 minutes. Put back together & HEY PRESTO,,, car back to normal. All guages working inc. outside temp, fuel guage & MOST IMPORTANTLY, the car starts & stops & starts & stops & starts & stops,, just like it's supposed to!!!
As i should have used a magnifying glass the very first time i looked at it months ago, i don't really have any excuses,, but i still sort of knew what i was looking for.
The original solder job just tends to break away,,, giving the intermittent fault with the immobiliser. The top two terminals of the green multi-plug are the immobiliser ones. Mine were the worst,, but there were lots of terminals of that particular plug which the solder had cracked on. We re-soldered all of them & decided to look at all the rest,,,,there were more problems with the other black plug & also many of the other posts on the rear of the clock panel faulty too. I am surprised anything worked on the dash at all!!!!
The tricky bit is taking the needles off the clocks,,,, they actually just pull off,,,, but make sure you put them to their stops before taking them off,,,you may find that a smallish flat screwdriver will help to prise them up a little if you get the screwdriver between the needle & the white round bit of the clock. I know it feels like it doesn't want to come off, but it is just quite tight,, have faith,,, it will come. Be very careful not to touch the contacts for the LCD bits of the dash. AND, once you have re-soldered the offending posts & begin to put the dash back together,, the needles will require to be put on again,,,,, do not push them right onto the dial face as they will not move & cuase you to think you've created another problem. If you push them right home, just ease them back off the dials a smidge, again with the small flat screwdriver & check by hand that the needle is free to rotate. It will be smooth, but feel slightly clicky, if you know what i mean. If its still too tight on the dials you'll feel & Hear the resistance. The rest is really just plain sailing. I put my clocks in without putting them back in their holder,, to check that everything was working & took it for a spin,,, AS IT STARTED FIRST TIME!!!!! Which it didn't before i fixed it! That's how i found the speedo needle was too tightly home!!! Easy fix, as i didn't have to completely strip the dash again!! Hopefully you can avoid this relatively simple step now though!!!

CAN i suggest that ANYONE who feels that they THEMSELVES cannot do this,,,, PLEASE find a pal or a friend of a pal or family member to give them A HAND!! THIS JOB is a piece of CAKE & DOES NOT require anyone charging you £50 +++++ an hour TO DO!!!!! OR spending £500 +++++ on a new dash, etc, etc.
IT IS simple HOME DIY stuff!!! HONEST!!!! Don't be put off!!!!
CHEAP, SIMPLE & EFFECTIVE!!!!

DO THIS JOB FIRST, it might just save you your car,,, your missus,,, your sanity & your hard earned dosh!!!!

I love driving this little car, it's a weapon!!! Mine's running 167 Gee Gee's & every one of them is a thoroughbred!!!!! Would like some more to join the stable,, but this is fine for now!!

GOOD LUCK,,, hope my MISERY is someone else's JOY!!!

Get stuck, email me. Be glad to help!!!!

Cheers,

Finners ;0)

I have exactly the same problem with my 2003 Seat Ibiza 130 TDi Sport. Apart from the intermittent starting my temperature guage and petrol guage also are intermittent (in fact the petrol guage has packed up completely it seems!!)

My problem started 14 months ago and I paid a local garage who was a Seat specialist 300 notes to sort the problem out. This was fine for about three weeks until the problem started happening again. When telling them of the problem all he could say was 'thought that might happen and I think you need a new dash unit' which of course I wasn't impressed with!!

Since then I've persisted with it carrying on like this until recently where I couldn't get it to start for about ten hours. I took it to a motor electrical firm who re-soldered the connections around the ignition system but have found since then that I have the problem everyday now and is driving me round the bend (no pun intended!) [:@] [:@]

I just wondered if possible whereabouts Kellybee or Roanna is based as I must admit that I honestly don't know what to do with dismantling the dashboard to sort out the problem or where to start plus I don't trust Seat garages one bit after having issues with them in the past regarding my car plus also in my previous employment so I really don't want to be spending more money than I have to!! If anybody can help me carry this out I would appreciate it and would also be willing to pay some contribution to them for helping me. I live in Central Bedfordshire but travel to the North West quite a bit and also willing to travel (within reason) to other places as long as its not too far to get it sorted.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME IF YOU CAN!!

Many thanks.

I live just outside of Flitwick in Bedfordshire but spend a lot of my time up in Liverpool when not working.

I have to admit my petrol guage still goes wobbly on ocassion, usually on long journeys it goes down to zero while I'm driving when there is a full tank. If I stop and restart the ignition though its fine again. I have not attempted to re solder the pins on the fuel guage as they are harder to reach unless you have a thin soldering iron and a very steady hand. I just have just accepted it a s a quirk and left it. I dont trust SEAT dealers especially Marshalls Cambridge to do any work on my car. I have had too many bad experiences with incompetent staff and 'mechanics' that just do not listen.

you can disable the immobiliser if you know what your doing as i had mine done, that was before i knew you could resolder the pins as i didnt fancy the £500 for new instruments.
