Sorry for bumping a thread. I had the rattle noise and took the car into seat and they have told me I'm getting a new engine put in as there are more issues than just the chain. Hopefully it'll run like the courtesy car. So smooth.

Your Pistons have touched the valves then. It's part of the checking to bore scope the engine for damage

Okay cheers for the info mate. They service chap also said that the chain had stretched? Not sure how a chain stretches. But I'm not a mechanic. Lol.

Weak chains on early engines do stretch,
when they stretch the valves and kiss the pistons as valve timing goes way out

If you ever get to speak to a mechanic he'd of given you all the info but remember the service advisors customers speak too are normally very useless beings lol

Adam, would a 2012 1.2TSI have the modified chain ?

Ours has always seemed a bit rattly when cold, thought it was normal.
However, we are selling the car on to my son with 7 months warranty remaining so could be worth him getting it checked out even though there is no loss of performance

I cannot say by year's sorry.

If you leave your car parked up for say 2 days and then start it up does the chain rattle for a few seconds after starting?

If it's loud and prolonged rattling 9/10 times it's the chain issue

Performance loss may happen due to the incorrect chain timing, there is only so much the tensioner and ecu can account for.

Its the wifes car only until 18:00 tonight when my son takes ownership of it and takes it back to Essex so wont get a chance to check it out properly.

Have to check the next time he comes up for a weekend.

Pickup a new "FR Edition 1.4TSI ACT" tomorrow :D

I suppose it depends on how much "rattle" is acceptable and whether its continuous after its warmed up

Just to chuck my hat into the ring.....

I have a 2012 1.2 TSI FR and when cold I get maybe half a second of rattle when starting it up.

I booked it in for some other warranty work and mentioned it to the service guy and he said they would need to inspect it and get back to me. When I collected the car a different chap told me they could not replicate the fault and it was fine. I then asked him to come and listen to me start it and listen for the noise.....which it did. He said 'they all do that, it's fine'..

That may well be the hydraulic tappets coming up to pressure. If you read the handbook you'll see that this and the associated noise is described.

Just been searching online about this - I have earlier this afternoon had a conversation with someone who has had their engine replaced because the timing chain shattered in the engine. I am now worried about this as mine has been making a lot of noise on start up - kind of hard to explain, but like a roar, or like revving really hard, but I don't touch the accelerator when starting her up. Am going to go and ask at the dealers tomorrow afternoon since it's the same place that replaced the other engine.

Just to drag this thread up again. My 1.2 TSI has the rattle when the engine is warm. I noticed it yesterday when the stop-start kicked the engine back in again when I had the window open. It was only because the window was open that I noticed how bad the rattle was.

I guess I need a new chain/tensioner?? Any idea on costs?

I've just had timing chain kit (tensioner, guides, chains etc.) and oil pump replace for around £600 at a independent VW specialist. Not sure on exact figure as I had MOT done while it was with them too. Chain kit was replaced but they notices excessive wear on oil pump which could have been related as when they first looked at it there diagnostics was that no oil was getting to the top of the engine when first started. Since I've had all this replace the rattle seems to be gone (touch wood)

SO here's a thing. I started my car this morning before checking the oil. I did so with the bonnet open and the door open - no rattle whatsoever....??!! So what the massive rattle I heard the other day was I don't know - can cam chain rattle be intermittent?

So I discovered that the car needed 1L of oil added,.. which is a first as I've never needed to top it up before, but looking closer I found this which explained the low oil level and also an oily smell I've been experiencing in the car in the last couple of months.

Could the low oil (it was just at the bottom of the notch on the dipstick) explain the intermittent rattle sound??

Hi,

Following on from my other thread regarding hitting a speed bump... I started my car this morning to hear this noise:
http://youtu.be/nEs5SK80Wms (Not my car)

I'm a little concerned as mine is a June 2013 registered car so I'd have thought well past having these issues?

Does that video sound like the start of trouble with the chain? Would it account for a tapping noise through acceleration too?

Cheers

I don't about that particular engine, but sure, low oil can cause all kind of noises.

I'm hoping that somebody else has come across this!

After my 2011 1.2TSi has been left overnight, or for quite a few hours, it makes a pronounced rattling noise for the first few seconds of running.

My immediate thought was timing chain tensioner, but when the local SEAT garage replaced that, the problem persisted. They are now replacing the chain as well, but as I seem to have to lead them by the hand, I was wondering if anybody else has come across this - and what the fix was?

Currently working at Volkswagen, you will find that the actuator arm on the turbo for the waste gate rattles, there is no fix for this currently, if you replace the turbo with the actuator you will find it will be quiet for a while but will come back

Hope that helps
