Car fixed with new cam chain and in the process they fixed the minor oil leak. Local VW/Audi specialist, £506 not too bad I didn't think for a timing chain tensioner, full refill of oil, plus the investigated a mysterious rare loss of powersteering (it cut out on my street the other day on the way to the garage!) But couldn't find anything there, no fault codes etc - possibly needs a new battery since it's still on the original. They had the car for a day and a half so I thought the price was very reasonable. I seem to remember it cost similar for a timing belt change on a previous car that took a day.
The car seems smoother now and hopefully the mpg will now improve as the timing should be spot on.
