1.4 Mk1, What there like ?

After having problem after problem with me car and the £££'s mounting up am thinking about trading it in, but i like the car and want sum think a little bit quicker, i like the shape and car so thinking about a MK1 1.4 16V (a think its a 16V). And been on the phone to Adrian flux today and will only cost an extra £160 insurerins,

So a few questions

whats the pro's and con's ?
Are there as much fun to drive as the 1.0 ?
do there handle as well as the 1.0 ?
MPG ?
and all other useful info welcome

So its the 1.4 Sport your looking at and not the 1.4 8v S?

Well the sport has double the power of your 1.0, its still fairly light so should handle as well, and has nice kit - centre exhaust , rear disc brakes etc.

The only thing i would say is the sport has all the common problems. (pedal box breaking & weak gearbox)

The sport has the same gear ratios (infact im thinking its the same box) as the 1.0, so it wont be any more relaxed at motorway speed.

MPG probably a little worse than a 1.0, although depends how you drive it. Id think about 38ish MPG. Less if you cain it.

I have a sport and its proper fun, but would only recommend it as a town car as its not built for endurance.

I had mine a few years now and cover approx 10,000 - 20,000 miles a year in it and have no end of problems regarding the clutch / gearbox.

Everyone says the peddle box is weak on them but a guy I spoke to said its mostly on the small engine (1.0L) types. I never had a prob with the peddle box and the engine looks as if its going to go for another 200,000 miles as its sweet as a nut!

Thats very odd, and the opposite of what ive heard!

Ive never heard of a pedal box go on a 1.0, and i keep a close eye on clublupo and ive not seen it mentioned, its always the 1.4s.

Engines can wear prematurely on the 1.4s too, so ive heard.

Pedal boxes wont go on every one though, largly depends on the condition of the clutch, weather the pedal is heavy or not and the clutch cable.

Hearboxes are known to go pop too.

Dont let this put you off though, it wouldnt me.

Yeah cardaft thats what I thought but when I spoke to the mechanics who I take my arosa to, they have only ever welded the pedal boxes on 1.0 lupos / arosas?

Think the Clutch release bearing is noisy on our Mk1 Sport but it may also be the gearbox tho it still changes as smooth as anything so im thinking its the clutch and bearing!

Our sport has done 80k and touch wood there is no sign of the pedal box breaking!

I love my 1.4 lol, everyone still thinks it's only a 1.0l. But mines only an 8v, but (don't quote me on this) but apparently the 16v need alot more attention in the short term than the 8v's. I haven't had any problems (touch wood) with mine to date and I've had mine now 2years

Stick with an Arosa mate, the Pug106 is like all the other Pugs made off tin foil or maybe 1 grade higher. Bernie
