I thought it was about time we had a thread praising the 1.6tdi as mine is a little cracker and everyone seems to be slagging it off.
I have never seen the DPF light, getting an average of 57 to the gallon(best of 67.3)between fill ups, reasonably fast for what it is ,comfortable, reliable (so far 25,000).The only slight complaint I have is road noise, but you do get used to it.
Lets have some replies praising this little car for a change.

Had mine two and a half years now and done 37,000 miles. Never had a dpf light and never had a single issue with it! Best I have done for a tank of fuel is 73mpg and the best for a single journey is 77mpg.
I had planned on selling this car next April when it is three year old. I'm not so sure now though, it has been so good I might keep hold of it for an extra year

 sergio.

Piss poor mpg averaging around 42mpg since new. uncomfy seats, lots of road noise.
but then it's £30 a year to tax it, cheap insurance, engaging drive and one of the prettiest small hatchbacks around.
I'm keeping mine til I can afford to run and have space for a 1 or 3 series bmw

My MPG is getting worse. I drove it cold in heavy traffic with an angry right foot and got 9mpg. Lucky to get above 45 now, after peaking at 52 with about 40k on it.

I find the differences in fuel consumption from car to car very odd. The last eight days has seen me do nearly 1400 miles and that included two manic trips to London which accounted for 1200 of those miles and this was driven in a VERY heavy footed manner! Yet my car still returned 52mpg overall, a figure I am very happy with.

So why are others struggling to get 40mpg driving normally!

I sold my 1.6 CR TDI and bought a 1.2 TSI. 1.2 TSI gives a far more consistent MPG and is much nicer to drive.

Well if anyone's ever near Sheffield on a weekend and wants to drive mine, it'd be interesting to see what they get in mine compared to their own

likewise, but only because i do short journeys which diesel particulate filters do not like.

having previously owned volvos, i can honestly say that there are a lot of things on the ibiza, that volvos do not have, i found the seats very comfortable, which is saying something, as volvo are regarded as having a very comfortable seat.

Maybe its just driving styles, you have to drive a diesel completely differently to a petrol.
Petrol relies on revs for power ,diesel has low down torque and do not like being reved(you pay heavily in fuel consumption)often a diesel will accelerate just as quickly by changing up earlier using the torque.
Another thing that may affect fuel consumption may be wether the car was run in properly or thrashed from day one.Even now with 25k on the clock I never rev it when cold.

I really don't understand how people get such poor mpg in them.

I notice they have a tendency to over-regenerate (remember you won't get a DPF light unless it fails a regeneration or two). I have had noticed 2 instances where it's regenerated, however, I spend around 75% of my time on the motorway, the rest on country roads, I do only a little urban driving. Even after being on the motorway all day, about 30 miles of dual carriageway traffic can cause it to regenerate for some bizarre reason.

I noticed mine on several occasions trying to do a regen after about 1 hour of motorway driving at about 75mph.

Yeah it's really strange.

I think mine has been doing it a lot more recently during the Winter, no idea if Winter fuel is to blame. I haven't been able to do my usual 30-40 mile journeys without a regeneration.

I'd go and get it looked at but there is no way I'm going to be able to prove it without logging it on VCDS.

Up until this point though, mines been great.
