The 1.9 doesn't have a DPF so it has less to go wrong, also the PD is a tried and tested injection system that works very well. "Better" is just an opinion really.

One is a PD engine I think (1.9TDI) and the other as said is common rail. The common rail may be better in time but i'ma big fan of the PD engines. They tune up nicely but are a lot heavier than the new 1.6

PD all day, practicaly bullet proof apart from the few common faults. common rail was introduced because the emmisions can be regulated and governed more stringently than previous engines.

They are both "tdi's" (tdi meaning Turbo Diesel Injection) but one is a PD pumpe duse (independent high pressure unit injector with a lift pump in the tank and a fuel pump on driven by the cam) engine, the other is a CR (common rail, with a lift pump, high pressure belt driven pump and electronicly activated injectors) engine.

the 1.9 can be remapped., the 1.6 can't (yet) as it's so new they've not developed a map for it, plus it uses a different ECu to the 1.9 so they need to learn how to remap the new ECu (according to revo)
The acceleration/top speed is the same as both engines have the same performance (iirc the 1.6 has slightly more torque) but it's the gearbox that becomes the limiting factor for 0-60 and top speed which is the same in both cars.

the 1.6 is also a lower tax band due to better emissions, so it's £35 a year tax instead of £120 odd

Common rail is now more refined and smoother than Pump Duse hence VAG deciding to drop any more pump duse development and move to common rail eventualy for all engines. Pump duse was also very hard to meet the Euro V emissions.

The latest Bosch 1800 bar system with Pizeo injectors is indeed more effcient than a pump duse of similar power. Add the ability to retain power over a wider bandwith be 15% quieter as well as up to 10% more fuel effcient. The downside is common rail is more costly than pump duse as a system.

The 1.6 CR has just gone into the A3 as well as the Golf and shortly the Leon as stocks of the 1.9 diminish, but as said for Seat and Skoda will make the car's more expensive as it is a more expensive engine.

By next year if you are buying a new tdi you will have to have the 16dti as not making the 19tdi any more, if second hand you will find it very hard to find a 19tdi as not many sold.
my dealer said thay never sold one 19tdi ibiza.

...They are both "tdi's" (tdi meaning Turbo Diesel Injection)...

TDI actually means TurboDiesel Direct Injection. This is because ALL diesels are injected (that's how they work). The old TDs were indirectly injected with a separate swirl chamber in the cylinder head.

The only difference nowadays, as mentioned above, is how the fuel gets to these injectors and how they are driven.

Dont get me wrong i'm a big fan of the PD engine (check out my past motors) but the new generation of comon rail diesels do their job very well. We have the advantage that common rails have been around for years and the systems have come on a long way so we are jumping on board quite late on it its development. It is a bonus that the PD isnt running a DPF, DPF and PD engines dont marry very well as injection is cam controlled to a degree so getting a post combustion delivery is very difficult.

hi just my tupence, i used to sell cars and from previous experience the cars with newer engines are generally more sort after by the second hand market because they are still in production. Having driven both on test drives i much prefered the 1.6dti its was smoother, quieter and didnt sound like a tractor when revd hard :p

Hey guys, looking into getting an Mk5 this time next year and I'm trying to find the differences between these 2 models as they have the same 0-60 and such but I can't find anything besides MPG different!

1.6

1.9

Well theres a 1.9 at Liverpool Seat and I would go for that, it 's more forgiving than the new 1.6 DPF on sort runs and regards mpg. In practice you will find not much difference. I have a 2.0 fr tdi with DPF and it is NOT ecconomical as it should be - take the dpf off and you get more MPG ?!?!. My next car will be Pre DPF going backward in time ! Euro 5 is not for short/commuter runs that the vast majority of us do. .................

I love my 1.9TDI sport
Good- 57-62 mpg on longer runs. Only £90 road tax next year. No DPF problems.

Bad-noisier than the CR TDI , and err .... no i cant think of any thing else!

I am going to throw a hand grenade in now....how about the FR TDI CR 2.0l 6 speed gearbox . out next year?
