250hp in a non special sporting model is special though. I wonder how current 260hp 2.0T audi S owners will feel about it though

Common rails also make their power more smoothly whilst PD makes more torque.

i'm very impressed with the 2.0 TDI (140bhp) in my reference sport. I had two Fabia VRS's (1.9 130bhp) prior to this and they were great, good on fuel and quite quick but the Leon is quicker in my opinion. Plus, with the ref sport, you get sports suspension, sports seats and twin exhaust. 2.0 power does not disappoint!!

Is it nice and quiet? Under 2000rpm @ 70mph?

Very quiet when cruising. The 6 speed box helps in that department.

I have to admit I dont find the engine as good as my old 53 plate 1.9 130 Leon.

The gearing is just a little out of sync IMO.

New common rail found in new A4 and as part of the A3 cab engine options. 143bhp. Likely to replace 140bhp in slight facelifted A3 in the summer as well.

I dont think it under 2k at 70, more like 65. It is nice and quiet though. I would not go back to a 1.9 having had the 2.0 now!

Sits just over 2k at 70, more like 2.5k at 80. Drove mine (2.0 140) down to York
and back last night - got 49mpg but had to *really* try. My old 1.9 PD 150 would have returned a much higher mpg...

Incidently, I drove cars with the two engines in question back to back last week, while my car was having its new turbo fitted. The 1.9 (105) is *much* quieter than the 2.0, imo. That said, since my 2.0 is owl-noise free (since the new turbo) it sounds far more refined..

I reckon I have the owl noise on my ref sport, by having it, are there any issues that it causes ie reduced performance/fuel economy etc? I am not really in a position to take car to stealers as a company/lease car and not locally supplied.

I didnt notice any change in performance - but I didnt let it drag on for too long before I had it checked. Some people on the golf forums have experienced similar noises and I think some said that it was the bearings on the turbo...

I asked the guy at the garage who replaced my turbo - he couldnt tell me what was wrong without closer inspection of the turbo.

All I know for sure is new turbo = no owl noise!

hmmm, that doesn't sound good!! Is only on the diesels? I've only got the ref sport for less than 3 more months then its FR TFSI power time! Sure it will last till then!

Not sure if the 'owl' noise is the same as the 'turbo whine' mine has. As its going to AMDTech. tomorrow for a service, I'll ask them what they think.

PS. Doing an average 70mph on the M25 this week, the best I've seen is 45.7mpg.

Has anyone tried both versions of the TDI engine?

Is the difference in torque dramatic?

Also can you notice the difference with the sports suspension on the sport model?

Just had a test drive in both versions today (along with other engine sizes) and I found the 2.0 very good and almost felt like a petrol engine, quite revvy and quick on the pick up. The suspension was also pretty firm. A good all round car.

Took out the 1.9 and the first thing was this was more like a 'traditional' diesel, i.e. it wasn't as good on the pick up and needed to be revved harder to get it going, although having some 35 less bhp when it only has 105 is going to curtail it somewhat.

The surprise was when up to speed there was little difference when overtaking and just pootling along. The 1.9 comes with only 5 gears as well although the engine noise wasn't too bad in the cabin and you could hold a normal conversation at around 80mph. The ride in the car was pretty firm as well, although I've found all seats eer on the firm side than most car makers to be honest.

After taking out several cars today we (missus and I) decided on the 1.9 tdi stylance. Looking forward to 55mpg, not looking forward to 11.3 0-60...

Over 2k @ 70mph? Interesting, in sixth my 150 1.9 FR does about 1850rpm.

I'd have thought being a slightly larger engine it'd be lower or about the same.

Maybe different with DSG you think?

I drive the petrol FR, but got a 1.9 diesel for a rental car on holiday. The diesel was awful. All the bad stereotypes of diesels- big turbo lag, narrow power band, noisy etc. Damn good fuel economy though

I believe the 2.0 diesel is "better", i.e. has less turbo lag and a better torque/power curve as its newer and more improved over the old diesels. I haven't driven one though, to be fair.

I can say the 1.9 diesel made me glad I hadn't bought it though. Made me appreciate my petrol FR more!
