I have recently bought a 2007 140tdi Leon and was wondering why the 170 produces so much more bhp?
Is it just detuned and a remap would provide the same power, or is the output lower due to a lower spec of engine?
I have searched the forum but couldn't find the answer

Bigger turbo different injectors. Different map. Think they share the same gear box and clutch tho. The 140 is the better car for big power tho.

Stage 1 on a 140 is around 185bhp straight away. Not sure where you go there and what the gains are like after that?

Ok on the serious side of things lol

I'd go for the 140 if on the pd engines the 140bhp don't have the dreaded dpf unlike the 170 so that's a good start of a reason to get a 140 over 170 plus the 170 has different injectors and loombe to the 140 and its quite a common failure point with the 170s

But from getting power out of too be honest there ain't really any difference in what would be required to get high power figures.

To get High power both 140 and 170 engines will need

Mapping

Egr delete

New exhaust system ok the 140 don't need the dpf removing so a good saving there

Front mount uprated intercooler and hard or uprated boost pipes

Bigger turbo

Better air filter

Uprated clutch

That's stage 2+ on both the 170 and 140 so in other words no difference required to get there but I'd say ythe 170 would be the better because the 140s injectors flow rate is slightly smaller than the 170 so I'd say at this stage the 140s injectors would really want changeling where the 170s wouldn't till stage 3

To go stage 3 both would want the same things again

WMI

Custom inlet mainfold and exhaust manifold

Bigger injectors

Custom mapping

And bigger still turbo

So once again no difference

30!!!!! Class mate! I have been looking into a remap and the dpf has come up as a problem. What is a pd engine, and do I have one?
Sorry for all the questions. It's awfull being a new bee!

What age is your car pd means its ran by I large high pressure style pump

Where the newer engines are called a cr which is ran by common rail in other words a little low pressure pump primes up the fuel and keeps pressure at the rail then a high pressure bug pump takes over and forces fuel into the engine the cr engine is lower emissions

My car is a late 2006 seat leon. Can you tell by the year or is it better to look at the engine?

Biggest benefit of buying a PD 140 BKD over a PPD 170 BMN is the 140 runs a Bosch EDC16 where as the 170 has the stupid Siemens setup.

Bosch system is miles better.

The only weak spot on the 140 is the turbo, replace it with a NEW unit (not a recon) and it'll give you no grief when mapped by a decent company.

VE engines run a large injector pump

PD engines run a lift pump in the tank, a high pressure delivery pump driven off the cam and each injector unit is also a high pressure pump, PD stands for Pumpe Düse = pump nozzle. It also has a fuel rail in the cylinder head

CR engines also use a lift pump and a high pressure pump ran off the timing gear but the injectors do not generate their own pressure the pump builds the pressure then the injector is opened by the ECU like a petrol. CR injectors also tend to use piezo crystal technology.

When you make the comparison between the Bosch and the Seimens what do you refere to?
I am planning to remap to 185bhp as soon as possible. Should I think about turbo first?

Management system and injectors.

Some turbos are fine but some don't stand the ecu mapping test.

So its a case of get get it remapped, boost the turbo and see how it holds up, if it can't handle it replace at that stage with a new turbo?
What would you recommend as a good tuning company near Newcastle?
I know from experience with my last car how important it is to get a decent tuner. It can make or break a motor!!!!!

Just have a look on darksides website or their cars on you tube amazing figures from the 140
I witnessed there yellow loopo doing 11 second quarter miles at ten of the best last month in a cloud of black deisel smoke! Wicked machine.
I have seen a few references to them on the net so think its worth a trip to them
