anyone have issues with oil pump failure on the 2.0 tdi engine. seems to be a common problem with this engine but havnt seen much on here about it ?

I read about this in an Audi Magazine a while ago. It was something to watch for as the miles piled on the cars. If I recall it was because the pump has a Hex shaped drive but the drive it sits in is star shaped and only grips the flats of the oil pump drive, Over time they wear and you lose all drive to the oil pump. something like that anyway

This is the first time I have heard about it since then. Has yours failed?

no mine is ok at the moment but from what i've read its quite a worry. it does seem to be more common in the chain driven oil pumps but the hex drive oil pumps are weak and badly designed too. it doesnt seem to be 'if' but 'when' it will fail and from what i've read this will most likley result in an engine and turbo replacement

just google '2.0 tdi oil pump failure' have a cup of tea handy

also seems more common in the longitudinal fitted engines such as audi A4 / passat etc etc. transverse fitted engines such as altea, leon, golf A3 etc dont seem to be as common
just wondering if its been seen much on here as its mentioned quite a bit on other VAG forums

It effected the BKP engine more than the BKD that we use. VW and Audi recalled some for modified drive gears but the same problem doesn't effect ours as far as I know.

so should i hold off selling it then ?

after a few weeks of ownership the turbo packed which i'm replacing on thursday

and then i read about oil pumps failing all over the place !!!
i honestly think i should have bought a 1.9pd but the 2.0pd with DSG is sooo nice and would rather keep it if is going to last

You need to find out why the turbo packed up. What side went? Has the compressor side given up? If that is so then there are going to be metal fragments in the intake which will destroy the new turbo if not cleaned out.

I agree with techie, never seen or heard of any faults with the oil pumps on the bkd lumps.
With regards to turbo failure and oil pressure; if the oil pressure drops then the bearing collapses and the rod will snap. Some Vag turbos are made of old coke cans anyway.
