The temperature gauge will get up to 90 in a short time but then its where the weirdness begins. The needle will then slowly climb up to as shown in in this pic:-

Its also not speed dependant as if your doing 20 or 60 makes no difference on it climbing. It will drop to two segments above the 90 and sometimes to 90 be then slowly creeps back up and down. I've had a coolant flush/change and the garage say the thermostat checked out ok. A temp sensor changed at the same time. Driving it this morning its still doing it and next will check for oil in the plug tubes as when using boost on a dual carriageway it spluttered and the check engine light started flashing. The rocker cover has leaked oil into the plug tubes in the past.

One other thing is the engine fans will come on if the engine is warm and the key removed every time. If you restart the engine the fans then cut off again until you remove the key. Fans can at time run for 3 mins full speed. At a drive thru i did feel and hear the fans kick in and the temps gauge drop fast to 90 but then did its slow climb again :(

Is there any signs of your coolant leaking? I would suggest plugging the car into vcds and running a scan see if any codes comes up

The only code that came up when scanned was the evap charcoal flow claiming fault but all that would do is slightly affect economy but the car will drive fine with it. The garage says the thermostat was ok but it has all the hallmarks of a sticking one as over 30-40 mins it can up to twice go right back down to 90 and then seconds later start climbing. I can hear the fans trying their best to bring temps down at times and it sits at 100 to 105 with fans full speed regardless of the speed.

Change the thermostat and see if things improve. Also check the radiator is hot all the way across, if there's a patch that is different it might indicate a blockage.

If nothing improves you'll wanna do a compression check

Getting worse 😬 that's when cruising at 50 in roadworks. Radiator shroud between the fans feels cold once parked up after it. Garage says thermostat is ok but erm I say it's F*cked and it's sticky just getting worse.

I parked it up at home last night and using a spare golf right now as I won't be using it until it been back to a garage. That was the first time it ever hit the red zone. I was only a couple of miles from home at the time.
