Hi guys,

Hope you are all well. I’ve recently purchased a 2017 Leon fr and I love the car, however, theres a weird issue that I thought I’d ask the community before I get stung at a car audio shop.

So when I play any audio, only the passenger side front door mid speaker and a pillar tweeter, and the driver side a pillar tweeter work. The driver side mid doesn’t work along with the 2 rear door speakers and tweeters.

I am mechically minded when it comes to changing the radiator or brake pads and discs but when it comes to electrics. Absolutely 0. What’s the first thing I should check? What can I do to find the source of the problem? Has anyone had any similar issues?

Thanks in advance

You may try removing non-working ones and plugging them where the working ones are. If they don't work there either, then you'll know that you have blown speakers. If they do, then a wiring or a connector problem is more likely to be the issue here. Also if a previous owner had replaced the infotainment unit, for some reason, with a different model unit which wasn't configured for the speaker setup the car has and didn't bother to get the software configuration fixed too, then things like this might happen.

Thanks for your reply serdar, see I cannot comment too much on the previous owner as this vehicle was bought from co part as a cat N. It doesn’t seem that the head unit was changed, everything seems standard. Rather than swapping the speakers around, is there a way I can check if there is power going to each corner where the speakers are not working? Surely this would determine whether the speakers have blown? Also are there separate fuses for each speaker or are all speakers running through one fuse?

I don't have any specific knowledge of the speaker wiring but you do not usually have fuses in the speaker wiring. What I would do is choose whichever speaker is easiest to get access to and test that. It can be done with a multimeter and should not be open circuit. If you do not have a multimeter, pull the wires off the speaker and touch a small 9V battery onto the terminals. You should hear a loud click. Don't hold it on there too long. If nothing is head, the speaker is dead.

As said in the post above, you can measure the resistance on the speaker itself. Unplug the wiring from the speaker, set the multimeter to resistance mode and measure it using its terminals. You should read an ohms value close to its rated impedance. If you see zero or infinity, then the loudspeaker is blown or have short-circuit in it.

I know you said the drivers side tweeter works, but have you made sure that the balance/fader is adjusted correctly?

Hi yes I have checked setting on radio, balance is in middle, there are no options for fader

Ok guys quick update here, tested the driver side door speaker with a multimeter and was showing 4ohms. Then checked wiring to speaker with AC setting on the multimeter and got up to 1.1 while turning volume up. I had already bought a replacement speaker and decided to connect this even though existing speaker was showing 4ohms. Lo and behold the replacement speaker worked so turns out existing was blown. Now I have front door speakers and tweeters working.

Both rear door speakers and tweeters are not working but Im unsure if these are blown as on the head unit there is no option for fader, only balance. This potentially means the unit thinks there is only a requirement to play 2 channels rather than 4 hence why there is no option for fader. Has anyone had experience with this and know how to unlock the rear channels?

I had brought up the possibility of a unit replacement in my first reply. This may prove correct in the end. If you don't mind sending your VIN to me via a private message and also share your unit's part number here, I can look up if the part number of factory-installed unit matches your current one to begin with. But that may not be enough to get a definitive diagnosis of the situation. Even if the part numbers match, configuration of your current unit might not be matching your speaker setup and this can happen in case of a second-hand replacement of infotainment unit.

For the part number of your current unit, look for System Information option in submenus, sorry that I can't remember the exact name and place of this menu item.

Just as an aside do you have any DTC being reported on the scan.
