Just to add ... (you can tell I'm worried about this as I can't stop thinking about it), the first symptom was a single misfire at a steady throttle on Friday evening. The noise only came AFTER the engine stalled in traffic. After restart, the noise was immediate, then disappeared when I drove off. The noise did not return until I was ticking over on the drive on return home.

Prior to this, I have never heard this noise, or anything like it before.

Ok .... I DO have an OBD scanner and was lurking in my garage. I forgot I bought one years ago and used on my old mk2 Cupra.

Codes as follows ...

1. P0131 02 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage Bank 1 Sensor 1

2. P0303 Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected

3. P0304 Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected

4. P0300 Random / Multple Cylinder Misfire Detected

For P0131 I get:

For a P0303 I get:

For a P0304 I get:

For a P0300 I get:

Hopefully it is sensor related - but the noise did sound rather metallic so could also be a mechanical fault?

Thanks for that. Yeah, the noise if the bit that worries me - and my mechanic.

Worst case scenario he said could be a £5k engine swap. I hope not :( he said he's never seen this on one of these engines before. I also spoke to another VAG garage and they said they haven't either and they have a 500bhp tuned Cupra on same engine that they race and it's bullet proof.

Yes you can tune these motors well but each engine is different and it only takes a small issue that is missed to cause problems.

I had injector failure and was very lucky car went into limp mode and i was able to park the car up. Garage told me that I was lucky no damage to the bore but it could have caused a very expensive bill had i carried on driving.

anyway fingers crossed its not major and easy to fix.

Thanks TT. The way my mechanic reacted when he saw the video though ... not a good sign.

Can't remember the technicalities of what my mechanic said, but he put a scope in and said lots of bits were broken. Needs a new engine :(

In my ownership it's never been abused. Always looked after. I even have the oil temp on the dash so I know when I can drive it harder.

At least this thread will be here for others to see in the future if they encounter this noise and issue.

Unbelievable, feel for you mate. Did the mechanic say what could have been the cause?
I'm sure there was someone else on here with a cupra who had an engine failure, wonder what's weak on the engine for this to happen.

He said until he strips it, he won't be able to know. I asked him how this could have happened to such a well looked after car with a supposedly resilient engine from VAG and he said it was just really bad luck; he said out of thousands there is always just one that is waiting to detonate and I was just very unlucky that it happens to be me on this occasion.

Oh no, that sucks.
Has it ever had a rattle on cold start?
The EA888 can have timing tensioner issues - which could result in the chain going slack and jumping a tooth with obviously bad outcome!

No, nothing. Just absolutely normal. No changes. No symptoms. Just running perfectly as always .... then on Friday, came out of nowhere. Considering I did 180k in a mk1 LCR and 130k in a mk2 LC, this can't be right. I chose this engine thinking it was an evolution of what I had tried and tested in the past.

My LC300 was standard. No modifications at all.

My 2002 LCR and 2010 LC were stage 1 remapped but they lasted forever.

Sorry to hear this … Just heard the video, it sounded a lot like my old Subaru which I managed to melt a con rod bearing on, ended up as an engine rebuild too. That was due to over revving. But sounded like you did everting right!

Are you putting a whole new engine in/repairing or finding a used one?
