Model Year 24/25 2024 Cupra Formentor – Rear Light Warning Keeps Popping Up

I've owned a 2024 facelift Cupra Formentor for about 2 months now. The car hasn't even reached 1000 km yet, and I'm already experiencing a strange issue.

One day when I started the car, I noticed a warning light on the dashboard, along with two messages on the multimedia screen:

• “Check left rear light”
• “Check right rear light”

Both messages appeared at the same time. I pulled the handbrake and checked the lights without turning off the engine, and everything seemed completely fine. When I turned the car off and restarted it, the warning messages disappeared. This same situation has happened 4–5 more times. Each time, the messages go away after restarting the car.

I took the car to the Cupra service where I bought it. The technician there told me that new models have a lot of sensors for control purposes, and sometimes they can show false warnings like this, but that there was nothing actually wrong with the car.

However, after seeing the warning again even after the service visit, I’ve started to feel frustrated — especially since this is a brand new car.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of issue? Any advice would be appreciated.

It happened to me once for one of the turn signals. As in your case, once the car was turned on and restarted the warning went away. It has not reoccurred as yet. Not at all sure why it does it. The engineer in me suspects that some algorithm for picking up faults on the CAN bus is maybe a little too sensitive.

The individual lighting channels are monitored for cold and warm. The BCM control unit is responsible for this...a sensible start would be to read the error log with a reputable diagnostic tool and report it here.

I had a 2021 Formentor for 4 years and I used to get random messages about various rear lights not working plus park assist not being available etc. I flagged with Cupra numerous times and it never really got sorted but would always reset after I restarted.

Weirdly, my wife who had the memory seat in a different position to me used to get way more warning lights. I can't see how the 2 could be linked but definitely worse for her.

I have this happen quite often, spoken to CUPRA and apparently it’s a common fault with the facelift car, software issue apparently and they’re working on an update, but don’t hold your breath on that one! , I tend to just ignore it until I restart the car again then it goes off. V3 2025 model.

I had exactly the same problem with my recently purchased V3. However 2 days after phoning the service department and booking it the problem disappeared. It only happened when using keyless entry.
Hopefully it has been fixed now via through air.

It’s something to do with the keyless entry system, if you use keyless entry and open the driver door before the rear lights have finished doing their little dance it confuses the system and flashes up as a fault with the rear lights, the best way to stop it happening is to go into the lighting settings and turn off the lights animation and it won’t flash up as a fault then. Not really good enough for a new car but CUPRA are not going to be bothered about it now, you’ve paid the money so put up with it!

Had exactly the same thing this morning (only got car back from dealer yesterday) Checked lights and absolutely fine, restarted and faults cleared. Ill also turn off the Keyless just in case that is the issue.

There's a big update out that's supposed to take care of this and other lighting issues (flickering ambient, etc.) for the facelift cars. I've only just had my 2025 CUPRA Leon updated about two weeks ago so it's still too early to tell given the intermittent nature of the warnings and glitches but so far so good and other forums also report positive results. The car was with the dealer for 2 days to complete all the updates and it can't be done through your eSIM. I had tried all the keyless / coming home / leaving home / light animation off stuff but the warnings / flickering would eventually come back. I was lucky enough to get the rear light warning when I dropped into the dealer for oil and they looked it up and the issue had recently been flagged in my region. Get the warning on video and show your dealer. Hopefully, this "PV4" update to software version 2768 has addressed most of these issues. The only bug I've seen come back so far is if aminations are enabled for the ambient lighting then the middle of the dash strip can go dark during the phone call animation (left and right corners should just pulse in a different colour while ringing) and doesn't come back on after the call ends without you changing the ambient light setting yourself.

Cheers yes if it comes back ill be sure to photo or video the fault. We are still on the previous software rather than 2768. The loan car we had recently did have the 2768 software, but that was suffering from this message on every start which was super annoying. whether you said Ok or not
