hey guys well the time has come to decide what to do,currently my car is off the road it needs clutch and breaks, also its not very economical,i think a sensor has goneand im not sure which it is,i have the 1.6 engine in mine
so for the price of doing them i thought if i spend a bit more i could slot a 2.0 in but then i thought a bit cash and i could get a 20vt in(been in rolys round cadwell WOW)
any way i carnt decide what to do and would like your help!
also would the mk3 ibiza suspention struts and hubs fit a mk2 if i was to put a 20vt in!
and would the abf and 20vt slot stright onto my engine mounts?
any help tips or advice will be very greatfull
thanks
kind regards
rich

Depends how fast you wanna go really. The 1.8t is a more developed engine and should give better mpg than the abf when driven sensibly. Your definately going to need to replace you gearbox. Don't know about engine mounts though, probably bolt on parts to make it fit though if you use an ibiza as a donor. The mk3 struts won't fit but the hubs will.

Personally i'd go with the 1.8t if you can afford it and will be happy with it's power. But then again coil packs and stuff go wrong and will add up in cost. The abf option would definately work out cheaper.

The o2j from a 1.8t ibiza box should fit maybe different mounts but these will be bolt on. Martin and Roly kept the o2a boxes as they work fine with the 1.8t. Your 1.6 will have an o85 or o2o both of which won't be very suitable for a 1.8t. Thinking about it you will need to change your shifter to a cable change one as well. To do this properly your gonna have to buy a comple donor 1.8t mk3 or 2.016v mk2.

Other things that can go on the 1.8t are mafs being the most common. But n75's and map's can go, more electronics means more costs but you get the better economy.

for me if it was a choice between abf and 1.8t id go for the turbo just because you can do so much more with it if you ever wanted to. abf is rather limited without investing 5k into it.

yeah but that's cos it's french :p haha

but all the threads i see on this forum about boost leak....its funny :D

really a 1.8 20vt has more scope, as you might want stage 1 now, watch in a few months, you will be wanting to go k03s hybrid (can get alot of power and also a flatter curved graph, not as just a spike at a certain rev) :)

haha i know what you mean power wise i dont want to go over the top but the thing that makes me want more power it been taken out in ian_cupra and rolys cars the power is sooooo unbleaveable, but they make them look so easy to drive!
im currently looking for a donor right now iv seen a passat thats fail mot on abs sensor,so i might go have a look at that! i just hope if i use a passat its as simple as an ibiza donor

the good side with the abf is it will just plug in and go, the 20vt can be difficult to get running once its in.
however if u have the money and patients to do it properly id go 20vt
what about a vr6? a full golf can be had for around £800 as the donor and would be good the only thing worying me about vr6 ibizas is do they handle like dogs?

lol ok then convince me!

What gearbox do you have? If it's 020 you can use it on the abf to keep it rod change, that's what I've done and saves messing around with putting in the hydraulic pedal box and gearbox.

I had the option of getting a 20v turbo but went ABF because I want to supercharge it next yr!

ibiza_95

1.8T MK2 Conversion
go 20VT :)
you keep the o2a on an originally ABF'd car so you dont have to change all the gear change assembly, though if youre currently on an o2o box with rod change, youll want to swap the box cos the torque from a 20VT will rip it apart in no time...
If you get chance post a photo of your engine bay showing the engine mount locations, then well be able to tell you how easy it will be to mount... smaller engines had different subframes, but i dont know what the 1.6 will have...
20VT will be dramatically more expensive than an ABF conversion, simply because of the different style of engine and initial cost, and with the 20VT needing more custom stuff to make it work...

think about, me, martin, and Ben all went from an ABF to a 20VT ;)

Your subframe is going to be the same to mount the rear engine mount & gearbox mount, but the front subframe on the 1.6 is slightly different & lacks a cut out you need to have.

I can't find my pics from when I dropped the ABF into my Vario, but it all bolted up. no fabrication required.

Either engine is good for 40mpg, but if you have nothing to start with - go 20VT. I only went ABF because I had the whole car to rob.
