53 Reg Reverse Lights Problem

Hi All,

I recently bought my MK4 53Reg Seat Ibiza 1.2. However I forgot to check reverse lights ( do you ever check lights when you buy a car?). I managed to take the left rear cluster out and changed the bulb attached to reverse light socket and it did not work. Then I thought it might be a fuse issue and checked the fuses but that did not help either.

Has anyone experienced this problem before? I made search on google and came across the same problem yet it was for MK1 Leon and telling to change the switch. If you know where to find the reverse light switch on MK4 Ibiza's, that would be much appreciated.

I think the switch will be under the gear gater somewhere ? so when you select reverse the switch is pressed and lights come on.
Im just guessing but it is on other cars

there prob be a socket which goes into gearbox. that was my probelm on a few other cars. try a new one of them. best thing to do is take the plug out the socket and get a piece of wire and loop it round and turn ignition on and see if they come on

its most likly the wire on the reverse light switch broken its located on the front of the gearbox the wires are slightly too short and the movement of the engine weakens the wires and they snap.

I am going to check the switch, but I do not really know where to find it? I took out the shield on the gear find a piece of cables but thought that belong to lighter.

have you got any pictures/photos showing how to get there?

i have this exact problem but the light flashes on/off... any ideas where e.g top or bottom of the gearbox the plug is?

as far as I remember, there are four screws. two of them are reachable by taking the rectangle cover off. the other ones are hidden by two plastic pieces on the sides (you can easily see them). take them off then you'll see the screws, unscrew and you don't event have to pull, it comes out easily.

P.S. I thought it'd be better to send this message as p.m. but since I'm a newbie, I haven't got that functionality yet. Sorry for that and let's help me about bloody reverse light switch.

As said already twice, I'd reckon that you will find the reversing light switch is screwed into the gearbox casing - and it has been said its screwed into the front of the gearbox casing - this will be the only lump screwed into the gearbox casing that has a cable attached to it - ie look for it under the bonnet and feel around for some wires going to a screwed in lump that has a plug<>socket on the gearbox casing (lump on righthand side of engine bay).

I thought I'd write up the installation of parking sensors on the new Leon for those that are contemplating it. All in all it took around 4 hours, although once I know what I'm doing it should take about half that !


ok well similar thing ive mounted a parking camera and screen in my leon mk2 1P. it owrked ok for a few days i also found out the hard way about the blue black grey/black wires,the wire u think it would be is actually for the rear fog light it baffled me for ages untill i thought i would test all the lights untill i get a reading.anyway now when i revers the relay unit buzzes away like its on fire ie it keeps swithing very fast and i dont know why.the rear light wont come on atall now even once ive reset the dashboard fault light. so i have no reverse light atall with or without the unit hooked up. the strange thing is the reversing camera will work with the car turned off and into reverse but when the engine running it will make a buzzing sound on the relay and wont operate the camera or screen properly.


does anyone have any idea as my waranty ran out 2day and its just come out the garage and they wont look at it bewcause i have modifed it.lol

PLEASE HELP i do know alot about electronics but just dont know what the hell is wrong with this as it was working fine for a few days. the relay is fine i tested it and used another to double check.the screen is ok as it works ok when the engine is not running and the same with the camera. but no reverse light atall,bulb is ok even tried clearing the DTC's (fault codes cleared) but as soon as i put it in reverse the fault light comes up again
