8v gti gearbox's

hi guys, just been out in the snow & blown reverse gear out on my 99 8v gti , are the gearboxes specific to this car or do other boxes fit?
Please help & point me in the right direction

Other VWs had the same box. I think its a 02A box (sure someone will confirm/correct me soon). Just need to find one and swap over.

The input shaft size varies across the boxes - if it's different, it won't fit your flywheel.

(I'm running a (stronger) Mk2 golf box but I had to fit matching clutch and flywheel.)

weren't 8vs O2Os? rod change, id think any vw 8v would be a swop, albeit slightly different ratios, im thinking mk2/mk3 golfs as obvious donors.

get new drive shaft bolts, you'll probably need them when changing box's

Yes, as you say 020 box.

all sorted now, got a box out of a golf gti, found the input shaft had less splines (24 instead of 28) & was 2mm smaller in diam, but its all back together now with a new clutch & the clutch is feather light & i think the ratios might be slightly lower as its much quicker through the gears,

Sounds the same as mine.
