Indeed, it is a lot of jobs. AI quotes VW Group’s worldwide workforce at just over 600k (excluding Chinese joint ventures) so if that figure is reduced by ‘up to’ £100k then that’s an ‘up to’ circa 17% headcount reduction. Timescales to implement the workforce reduction isn’t mentioned, other than it’s proposed to do so over the next few years. Uncertain times for the workforce, but with the rapidly changing motor manufacturing sector, I dare say there’s a need for VW Group to become a leaner and more cost effective organisation to compete, survive and generate profitable results.
The unions will no doubt put up a fight to protect the interests of the employees so I can foresee turbulent times ahead………
