Hopefully the photo is self evident but what you should be able to see is a large 'scab' on the rear o/s disc. The car has been to the dealers today for identification of a rumbling noise which at first I had thought to be wheel bearings. I should have noticed this before but anyway the dealer said that this is not a warrantable item/claim and is normal wear and tear caused by an extended period being stood still!!! I'm not convinced as it looks like porosity in the casting i.e. a manufacturing defect, and with 29.5k miles in 27 months we haven't really being standing still (+ I am a heavy user of the brakes).

I later took the car to an independent VW specialist for a second opinion. They confirmed that it could be due to parking for 3-4 days in poor weather but that a good dealer would have honoured the claim (not that I have found a SEAT dealer that falls in this category).

Has anyone else had a similar failure? Also when the SEAT dealer looked at the car they said that both rear tyres were mis-shapen and need replacing (despite low wear with 5mm remaining). I have seen posts on this before so is there something generically wrong with the Altea that causes this problem? If I have to pay for rear brakes at my own expense, I am loathed to have to replace two tyres which should have another 10k left.

Are there similar patches on the other discs? If so then I guess the sitting stationary for a while argument stands. If not then it points to a problem with that individual disc, IMHO.

Just the single disc, the other side is perfect. The way we park the car might expose the drivers side to more of the rain... but I wouldn't have thought it sufficient to be a factor in this kind of wear.
