Hi guys as sed. Over the last couple of days my abs and esp light has come on at the same time but then sometimes go off. Is it the maf on its way out? Cheers

I can understand why with the TSC/ESP light could come on with a MAF fault as that's an engine related function but the ABS isn't though.

Also the ABS and ESP do have seperate lamps.

@Ronin225: See below: ABS light is 18, TCS/ESP is 26: They are two separate lights.

ABS+ESP means an ABS fault. TCS/ESP lights as well to show that both systems are affected.

@hypon12: Most likely fault is the failure of a wheel sensor, but get it on a diagnostics machine or VCDS to verify the fault.

TCS/ESP (26) light plus EML (22) is usually a solid indication of failed MAF. Apparently the MAF signal is used in the TCS calculations.

Yes, hold my hand up, i was thinking of TCS not ABS
ABS sensors are on the hub of each wheel, mounted just of what looks like a gear
They count each pulse to determine rotation speed of each wheel.
Vagcom will tell you which one to check

Are the abs sensors behind the brake discs ? My abs & tcs light come on & off,had it on vag.com has come up as both rear abs sensors

To test your maff there's two ways with out vagcom

1 sit at tick over with engine at running temp and rev hard down In neutral if you red line ok if you don't manage to red line and stops short mag faulty

2 unplug maf sensor take for run if u have more power then maf faulty if not then could be something else

There the ways if cheak my maf. To behonest of I sore ESP light and abs light I would never think it would be a maf faulty due to there nothing to do with a maf sensor

The sensors are attached to the stub axle carrier from behind, scanning a toothed wheel attached to the hub.

Thanks Muttley

So it the discs are taken off then it will be in view ?

Also i need to replace back plates as there rotten,do they unbolt or does the hub need to come off to get it off ?

Googling for Golf ABS sensor got me a good selection of pics

Front sensor, with the hub removed

From this VW Vortex thread which also shows the toothed wheel.

Here's the rear wheel hub and sensor - the toothed section is below the sensor here
